    Pros

very flexible scheduling for part time employees. if your sales are good you can watch movies for free.

    Cons

while the hours are flexible for part timers, they are also dependent on whether or not the store is busy. no customers, no hours. pay is okay but don't expect a raise. I've been with the company for a few years and recently asked for a raise and was told my commission is my way to earn more money, a raise wasn't even considered. and while you can earn commission, it's more or less a few dollars a shift. company doesn't seem to go out of their way to retain employees, heard there is a cap on how high a salary one can get. managers seem overworked.

    Pros

Fun and exciting environment to work in with customers and the busy atmosphere makes the work enjoyable for those who love movies and entertainment.

    Cons

The job itself is very challenging in that you are always working on tasks so time flies while at work but the pay compared to the amount of responsibility and work performed is not near enough.

    I worked at Family Video

    Pros

Free movies was a big plus. They seem to be growing and are training managers for new locations.

    Cons

It's customer service so you will run into some interesting and sometimes angry people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep going. I'm surprised that movie rental stores are still a thing but glad they are. While I left the company for a better job, I would recommend Family Video to someone looking for a job in the retail/CSR field.

    I worked at Family Video

    Pros

The Pro's of working at family video are:
    - almost always hiring (there is a high turnover rate, at least in the region I worked in)
    - flexible hours for part-time workers (really helped while I was in college to schedule around class times, big tests/projects and finals
    - no uniform
    - PRE-STREETS! I loved being able to rent movies for free before they got released to the public

    Cons

The Con's of working at family video are:
    - the District Managers, Regional Managers, and higher-ups are completely clueless as to how an actual store runs day to day. Therefore, you get less than nice emails from them or a message relayed through your manager about things that literally can't be changed.
    - the pay sucks, its over minimum wage but just barely (but let's be honest if you need a college job like I did you'll take what you can get)
    - Sales, I understand we live in a sales-centric type of economy but honestly, punishing employees for not selling enough out your over-priced candy and pop-corn?
    - At the store I worked in management always left you tasks to do during the night-shift (fyi night-time are the busiest hours, this stuff should be done during the day - for example five boxes of candy to be accepted into the computer inventory and then put out for display)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really? Management didn't listen to me when I was a "valued-employee" why would they listen to an anonymous reviewer?

I worked at Family Video full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits package was good and the schedule flexibility was great. Being able to be your own boss and make your own decisions was great in trying to grow the business. Salary was good and the experience was great for a young professional. Having the opportunity to work for Bill Mohler was a major decision in why I stayed so long.

    Cons

The only major con is having to work the weekends and being forced to work when the store is open as a manager. It makes it hard to get tasks done by potentially taking away from the customer service aspect that comes first and foremost in the company's mission statement. Unless your willing to move, its hard to be promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some of the upper management personnel need to learn how to convey a message that is motivating and not all about the sum of money one makes. It's a two way street. A compliment goes a long way, not statements about how much an employee's salary is or learn to not belittle an employee about what their college degree is in.

    Pros

    flexible schedule.
great team of people to work with.
    free movies.
    location.

    Cons

way too much to get done , by yourself, every single day.
    under staffed.
    low pay.
i have gone in on my own time to get things done just so we, as a store, wouldn't get yelled at by our district manager.
the "labor forecaster" is a one-size-fits-all .. doesn't accommodate for variables such as store size, new customers, phone calls etc.

higher pay will attract and keep better employees

    Pros

Ability to run your business like an owner. The team that I was a part of was supportive and helped to develop me personally

    Cons

Long hours with no breaks; Salaried store managers required to spend additional hours to buy movies to fill weekly demand, which depending on availability, can turn into a multiple-day chore, none of which is compensated. At the moment, the only real advancement opportunities are coming from the Marco's Pizza side of things, and I signed on for a Movie company, not food service
