Experience will depend on store staff. Upper management is horrible.

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Family Video full-time for more than 3 years

ProsFlexible hours, good for college student.

ConsRaises are non-existent, open all holidays, no schedules breaks no matter how long your shift. Openers often work 9-7 alone with no relief.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop hiring out of desperation. If your are going to make employees do reviews on managers than listen to what they have to say. If more than half the staff is saying the same thing it is probably worth paying attention too.

Decent Student-friendly Work Environment

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Farmington, MI

I worked at Family Video part-time for more than a year

ProsFlexible hours and reasonable work expectations. Acceptable wages. Opportunities for advancement and additional incentives available for good sales performance. Frequent rewarding interactions with pleased customers. Employee perks include discounted rentals and early access to new releases. Overall, a fairly typical experience in a retail/rental environment.

ConsHigh turnover rates and double standards in company policy. Difficult to walk the line between customer satisfaction and company standards at times. Frequent interaction with irate customers. Also, while opportunities for advancement are available, extra responsibilities often fall on lower tier employees without any recognition or compensation advancement. Relatively typical of any retail work environment, though.

It's all good until it falls outside their agenda

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Family Video part-time

ProsFun work environment
Commission sales are fun
Free movies
Not fast food

ConsYou'll hear stories, or be directly involved, in situations that aren't ethical. Everything is fine and dandy as long as you either (1) a good salesperson (2) a good looking female (3) a kiss @$$. Management has some serious narcissistic tendancies.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop with the corny tours. It's embarassing and out-dated. Listen to your employees. This is the second time I've worked for your company and nothing has changed in the 6 years since I last worked for Family Video when it comes to how employees are treated...aka poorly. It's great that you're the last chain video store still standing and you will be for years to come. Give breaks. Eating in front of customers is unprofessional. Focus on the positives of your employees and help them better themselves by coaching their negatives.

Fun environment if you enjoy customer service

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
Commerce, TX

I worked at Family Video full-time for more than 3 years

Pros-Wonderful opportunities to interact with customers and the community
-Open 7 days a week, so hours were pretty flexible if you had decent availability
-Opportunities to pre-screen new releases
-Character building (especially if you were like me and not exactly their idea of what an employee should "look" like)

Cons-No scheduled breaks or lunches
-No ability to call in for management or shift lead. If you're sick, you come in unless you find another shift lead to take your place.
-Inability to please auditors, regardless of your sales or store performance, if you are overweight.

Advice to Senior Management-Train continuously. Family Video is a wonderful mix of old school video store and new age convenience. Keep your staff's training as fresh as the product you promote.
-Keep as many employees in shift lead positions as possible to make it a little easier for sick employees to cover shifts.
-Lastly, don't let your employees waste years of their lives thinking they have a chance at moving up in the company if you have no intention of helping them achieve those goals. Be up front and honest. Had I been told in the first year of working for the company that I would need to lose a significant amount of weight to move higher than assistant manager-that no amount of hard work would out-weigh (excuse the pun) my weight, I would have moved on almost immediately. Don't misunderstand, I knew almost immediately that my weight was against me from a company image point of view. However, I worked for almost 4 years trying to prove that, despite my weight, I was still a glowing candidate for the MIT program based on my sales, customer satisfaction rating, job performance, and attendance record. However, in the end, the number on the scale is what ultimately stood between me and moving higher in the company.

Decent place to work

Video Store Clerk (Former Employee)
Lowell, IN

I worked at Family Video part-time for more than a year

ProsIf you work here, you get half off your video rentals. The pay is to be expected (around minimum wage). It's a good place to work at if you truly enjoy digital entertainment and enjoy interacting with people.

ConsI was on call quite a bit which ruined alot of my days. I'd stay home and wait until i'd have to call in and ask whether or not i should come in, and most of the time i didn't. To work in a place like this, you have to like who you work with. I didn't really like my manager or district manager while working here. They seemed to not care about the employees, but rather seemed to just worry about their own well beings.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe managers need to show more compassion and interest in their employees.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Use scare tactics to get follow through with employees.

Store Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Family Video full-time for more than 3 years

ProsFun meetings. Teach you to operate your own business, you learn everything from interviewing, balancing the store bank rec, time management, sales and coaching staff. Very educational.

ConsWhere do I start.....first off upper management would threaten your job to try and get you to complete tasks, this only works on kids and pisses off the people that work hard because they actually enjoy working. Just give me tasks and we will get done no matter what. Second, management is expected to come in and do a movie move on their day off, which upper management said should only take 4 hours. Well working there for 4 years the fastest one took me 16 hours with the help of my assistant manager. This was once a month. Third, I was promised promotion for 3 years. When I would complete the "only thing" holding me back from the promotion they would come up with a new one.
The max they will pay salaried managers is 30,000. So they start everyone off 24,000 - 26,000. In the time I worked there I only received one raise and it was 1000.00. The years after that they used the excuse that I had a promotion in my future. Even better they had me running two stores without compensation for a total of a year and a half, because I "ran my home store so well, and had a promotion in my future". When they did finally start to pay me for running two stores it was 1% of the other stores revenue, it was a low volume store, so after taxes came to around $150.00/Month (would not even cover my gas I spent to drive to the store 3 days a week).

Advice to Senior ManagementSee my cons and fix. At least pay people what they deserve so they want to stay.
