I worked at Family Video part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent opportunity to grow within the company. I worked up to shift manager within a month. They offer MIT (manager in training) programs for those looking to take the next step. There is room to make bonus commission by selling 1/2 off memberships and candy. I was able to earn over $300 in commission in one month working part time. A fun job that provided great interaction with customers on a regular basis. If you enjoy a fast paced workplace with a strong customer service focus then this is a great company to work for.

    Cons

    Very low pay
    Inconsistent hours
    High employee turnover

    Pros

It is a great company to build sales experience and gain leadership experience. They will work with you with school schedules and are very flexible.

    Cons

It is tough working nights and weekends sometimes but that is what comes with working in retail. The biggest complaint is working holidays but most you are compensated well for.

I have been working at Family Video

    Pros

Flexible hours, Decent pay for entry level jobs, Discounted/Free rentals

    Cons

Many part time employees tend to be immature and have poor work ethic, so you can get stuck with a majority of the workload. Closing with only one person at midnight.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company says customer service is number one so it should be. Managers shouldn't just base hours off sales; it should also include the better employees.

I worked at Family Video part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

It's a great atmosphere to work in! There is always something to do, and when your working with someone it's always a good time!

    Cons

Working in the store every night alone makes it dull sometimes, girls shouldn't have to take deposits to the bank at night after working by themselves

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have two people on shifts at night for safety!

I have been working at Family Video part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It's a great place to learn that customer service is a priority.
    Free pre-street rentals.
You are empowered to make decisions without managers approval.

    Cons

Consistently inconsistent. District Manager, Manager and Regional managers priorities can change from day to day.
Empowerment only goes so far. Do something they don't like and your empowerment means nothing,
Favoritism is a huge negative. This starts at the Regional Manager level. Even if you don't follow the priorities of the company, customers are first, you can advance through the ranks.
Hard working staff that care and follow the rules get no where slow.
    No lunches or breaks.
Managers do nothing and leave long lists for part timers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would advise all management to drop by their stores without notice. This included DM and RM. You are not getting a true perspective with your scheduled times. Auditors same things. You would be surprised as to how many of your part timers are actually running the stores.

I have been working at Family Video full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay is competitive, they work around your other responsibilities, and you get free rentals.

    Cons

In my experience, it is kind of hard to move up in the company. Even trying to become an assistant manager of a store is a challenge.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I'd say that if a full time employee is willing and wanting to move up, seriously consider them instead of just hiring someone into the position who hasn't been with the company. A lot of full timers and ever part timers are wanting to move up and completely capable. Maybe let them do it for a month, then reevaluate them and see if they should stay in the position. If not, then by all means, hire an outsider.

I have been working at Family Video part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

I learned a lot of skills and how to adapt to things that I was not used to.
    Learned some transferable skills.
Employees have a lot of freedom to act on a problem based on how they think it should be solved.

    Cons

Training was intense and there was a learning curve.
They expect a lot out of you during your shift.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase compensation for Customer Service Representatives.

I worked at Family Video part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Flexible work hours, fun minimum wage job.

    Cons

Stupidly difficult initial test, some upper-level employees difficult to work with

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some of the upper-level employees are quite condescending to lower-level employees. Not a dealbreaker, but enough so that I didn't like working shifts when my regional manager worked

I worked at Family Video part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

This was a fun place to work, overall. I enjoyed the atmosphere, the staff were helpful during training, management performs regular employee reviews to help encourage growth. The emphasis on sales is great for anyone who is looking to make a career in sales.

    Cons

The main con is that there are no set break times. They say that if you need to you can take a break but I found this primarily applies to smoke breaks and bathroom breaks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set break times for shifts beyond 4 or 5 hours would be a great place to start. Also, offering leadership training to staff would be great to encourage employees to stick with FV for the long haul.
