I have been working at Fastenal

    Pros

The 5 day work week is nice. The work is not difficult. They are financially solid, so there are no worries about vendors not accepting orders or payroll issues. Great way to build contacts in many different fields.

    Cons

Just like any company, it comes down management. If you have the right manager(s), its much better. Pricing can be high on some items making it more difficult to sell those products. 50 hour weeks and low pay rates make it difficult to retain good employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve distribution. Waiting for 1 to 2 weeks for product is unacceptable. Competitors are delivering within a couple of days.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great teamwork atmosphere between stores. Insurance is good and not expensive. Hours are good. This company has a wonderful training program. If you are hired.. Train! It helps everyone! Pay is good.

    Cons

District manager is inexperienced in "family". Too much micromanaging. This company should make it a policy to train ALL personal at THEIR facility so EVERYONE is working the "Fastenal way". The foundation of this company is wonderful! It's the arrogance in management that makes it difficult. This store is closing and this small area NEEDS this store here. Find ways to reduce overhead and reduce store size to keep this in the area. Only take a second to lose a customer. It's taken me an extreme amount to effort to mend bridges to get customers. Think about it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to train ALL employees for the sake of the customer and the employee. Take harassment and discrimination seriously. In my case, not much was done and I feel almost forced to leave WHILE HE GETS TO STAY.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pretty decent benefits and a great 401k package. Lots of little perks (sporting event's, vendor demos) that will keep you happy for a little while. Meet lots of people. The Fastenal School of Business is a great resource to improve your skills.

    Cons

Long hours, lack of leadership, very high turnover. very confusing pay structure. Accepting certain positions will basically put a ceiling on your career even though it is presented as an equal position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Better Communication

I worked at Fastenal part-time for less than a year

    Pros

The managers are really nice people, they will listen to you and help you. The company also has flexible schedule, so if you are in school, the managers would be empathetic. Also there is some great people working there. The pay is ok.

    Cons

There is no opportunity to grow, you will be doing the same thing every day, so the job is very repetitive. You will be a part-time employee for a long time. I only saw ONE full time position available, and who knows who gets it, also no benefits.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Laid back, learning oppertunity, bonus if EVERYONE does good. Advancment even if they are not quailifed. Plenty of hours

    Cons

Worked there roughly 3 yrs was only allowed to take one week off. People are put in managment position who are not qualified and are very young. Mangers that work their butt off bonuses hurt because of the others smoking or sleeping.employees break machines and let them set and dont say anything to anyone. It was the"not me guy" need to take more responsibility

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a 3 strike policy. If machinist or managers are in position and slackin take their bonus if it still continues suspend then let them go. manager had told me wont fire anyone managers are managing friends , room mates and freinds. Bad combos. I think this it were loss 50% of our bonus. Manager that slack hurt my bonus. I am on thr floor with my crew and work as hard as they do. I loss my bonus be cause other manager just want to hit the numbers not off profitabiliy

I have been working at Fastenal as a contractor for more than 3 years

    Pros

    1) flexible schedule for school
    2) flexible schedule for school

    Cons

    1) low pay
    2) dishonesty about compensation
    3) micromanaged
    4) always more, more, more (and 90% of employees say this)
    5) work culture is cold, stale, unsupportive
    6) no sense of team and HUGE lack of support from DM and RVP

so much more I could say, and being 100% honest, I don't even want to because it would not get heard by the people that matter. The problem is that new GMs and OSPs come in all gung-ho, but leadership is everything....poor leadership has led to more problems than I could ever record here. We have all heard that it rolls down hill. I see a LOT of remarks about greed and sadly, it is true. I constantly lose sales because Mcmaster Carr and Grainger are much cheaper. Word to upper management, "value" doesn't matter to people when they simply can't afford the price of gold for a bag of bolts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

See above....and they'll ignore it anyways because THEIR bosses have the same mindset. Again, it rolls down hill.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Work/life balance and flexibility
    Room for advancement

    Cons

    Very low pay
    Poor corporate help
    Weak low-level management
    Cronyism
    Nepotism

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Simple; pay your employees and they won't leave in droves after being trained. Fastenal wastes thousands of dollars training employees only to see them leave with knowledge and an advanced skill set to work for a competitor that will pay a fair salary. Fastenal, you will NEVER be the "top dog" of the big industrial goods resellers/manufacturers until you make that simple change...and there is more then enough money to go around, its just simple greediness at this point.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Working for Fastenal gives you a chance to make your own schedule to a degree. You can take days when you need them as long as you don't overuse. Great training.

    Cons

You work hard with very little appreciation or incentives unless your in sales. Even when you get to that point unless your Margin, Actives, and sheer luck of draw of existing customers are all good then your commission suffers. Starting at part time for minimum wage with a four year degree is ridiculous. Good luck advancing if you aren't friends with upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire better management below the RVPs. Raise salaries across the board. Offer full time to applicants with college degrees. Fix your base for how commission is figured up. Lower prices so competition with people like Grainger and McMaster Carr is possible on all items.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Fastenal is a great place to work for those dedicated to their careers--you will not make it far without considerable personal sacrifice. If you like to work hard, though, it can be fun. (Distribution, I have no experience in sales)

    Cons

Starting management positions (in Indianapolis distribution) pay horribly, almost insultingly low. Promotions can be attained if you have some leadership skill and are willing to work hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Practice what you preach, and think hard about that.
