I have been working at Fastenal

    Pros

With the right team and management one can go far in the company.

    Cons

Very demanding that can lead to a stressful environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management is solid, but lower management needs a lot of improvement. Instead, of focusing so much in sales; instead, help lower management become more of leaders than bosses.

    I worked at Fastenal

    Pros

The will allow you to deal with customers at a very early stage in your training. Management in the company is easy to work with.

    Cons

The good people leave quickly. Managers are close to the same age as the college students working for them. They do not have a lot of experience and knowledge to educate the younger employees. They won't blink an eye letting you go if sales drop for a month. During my time there we saw an extremely rapid growth in sales which required more manpower to handle. We hired 2 more people. We changed managers and within 1 month they let one person go due to a drop off in sales. They didn't even give the new manager time to recover from the transition and boost the sales back up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think your decisions through and keep calm when things begin to slow down. The answer ins't always to eliminate labor. Also, only make promises that you know you can keep. I was suppose to have opportunities in the FED division which never came to fruition.

More opportunities for individuals with bachelors degrees

I have been working at Fastenal full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Fast paced work environment, they promote from within, they are located all over the US and world so pretty easy to transfer to a new area should you desire. 3 weeks vacation your first full year

    Cons

Sometimes the stress of sales can get to you. Work hours can seem sorta long sometimes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in advertising. For instance google Adwords so our name gets out there to anyone who does a search for any product that we might carry.

I have been working at Fastenal part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, ability to make decisions on your own, laid-back culture, company trucks.

    Cons

Fastenal does NOT offer full-time to anyone, and they cut the part-time hours from 24 to only 17 hours a week due to "company saving during the holidays."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Everyone starts out as part-time, then you get promoted to full-time inside sales, then you become a full-time outside sales person which is commission based.

I worked at Fastenal full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I loved what I did, who I worked with, and the customers we serviced! Previous Management was like family who encouraged, supported, and worked with employees rather than sitting on a pedistal. $10.00 starting p/t hourly wage is customary, once tasks are learned; it can be a fun and easy environment. Benefits for full time employees are very good, especially considering the current Health Care situation!

    Cons

Management needed organization, consistancy, management, and human relation skills. Position, Wages, Salary, and Commission are all based on numbers corporately established and may be embellished by the DM; although advancement is encouraged, sometimes the mental, physical, and emotional toll isnt worth it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Unfortunately, my comments would fall upon deaf ears.

    I worked at Fastenal

    Pros

Work 60+ hours and devote your every minute to be BLUE for Fastenal, you will get paid!

    Cons

It's very political. Stressful, short handed with having a knowledgable staff that are professional, lots of baby sitting, a turn and burn atmosphere that customers get tired of.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to pay for talent, hire real sales professionals, reward the people that take the job serious as a career, and acknowledge the ones that make the company!
