I worked at Fastenal full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Ability to have a dislocation from direct management, to set sales your way.
    Company 4x4 pick up trucks.
    Average competitive pricing.
Although slow-- internal manufacturing offered hard to get items

    Cons

Company is overexerted in terms of brick and mortar and otherwise.
    Overworked underpaid employees.
    Understaffed branches.
Different divisions taking directive off direct sales.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At least in my market NY: Long Island, the availability of a product is frequently an issue. The branch model does not work with cost cutting inventory reductions at the HUBS. This prevents sales. Branches should be staffed by more employees-- perhaps less branches.

    I worked at Fastenal

    Pros

Management is very helpful and really there to help you in anyway. Flexible and relax environment. Good way to get your foot in the door in the industrial supply world. You will learn the business and company from the ground up which was an awesome experience for my early career.

    Cons

I really enjoy working for the company but pay is too low to continue full time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To the CEO share the wealth with your employees and raise the pay because the employees deserve it.

I have been working at Fastenal part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

I had an amazing GM. She worked with my hours and tried to give me more when needed.
    Off every weekend
    Great Benefits
    Advancement-Based on location

    Cons

The worst part about Fastenal is working part time. I was only able to get 25 hours a week as part time.
During the winter holidays, I went down to 16 hours. That was directed by our corporate office.
Your location really determines a lot. If you are in a slow area, your opportunities for advancement may be slim.

I have been working at Fastenal full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Training is amazing. I knew nothing about this industry and am now the 2nd most knowledgeable in my store. Good health insurance, pay is OK. Lowest pay in the industry, from what I've been told. Overall, completely satisfied with the company.

    Cons

Little to no room to grow. My Outside Sales Person (OSP) has been with the company 3 years and has not seen a raise or promotion. Top performer in the district. Pay needs to be higher. No degree needed (can be good or bad).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Require a college degree, even an associates. Stop lowering commission ratings.
