I have been working at Ferris State University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of team work and allows for very flexible hours. Also some positions allow for homework to be done at the same time which is an huge advantage.

    Cons

Employees are asked to stay late before breaks to make sure all residents are checked out properly. All hours of the week have to be covered by someone which means some people have to work any hours from 12:30pm to 7:30 am.

    Advice to Management

Make sure you have the time for this job and don't sign up for early morning shifts if you're not a morning person. Also you must be very organized and have to multi task with out messing up.

  2. Very supportive of student internship development.

    Pros

Very supportive of internship development and benefits.

    Cons

The funding/budgetary model is broken. You are not rewarded for efforts or substantial growth in internship numbers.

    Advice to Management

Support those who want to grow the program. Reward positive behavior vs. settling for mediocrity.

    Pros

Getting to work during different performances and events is a lot of fun. I enjoy the theatre in general which is a major added benefit of being able to work there.

    Cons

Hours are inconsistent due to schedule of events.

I have been working at Ferris State University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Focused engineering, technology curriculums. Technology faculty have significant industrial experience and not just academic experience. Teaching focus to pass on the profession. Big Rapids is a good rural community vs congested metro life.

    Cons

Focused engineering, technology curriculums tend to make people overly protective of their "turf". Too myopic sometimes. Lately, administration is changing university focus in a direction away from a career focus and more to political correctness, liberal arts, and general education.

    Advice to Management

Administration is changing university focus in a direction away from a career focus and more to political correctness, liberal arts, and general education.

    Pros

It is really a community environment at Ferris State University. The small town makes for an environment where it is easy to get to know people. They are flexible with time off and half days when you need to take care of personal business.

    Cons

The small town can sometimes limit people in their personal and professional growth. There is a limit to how far you can go at a University of this size.

    Advice to Management

They can do a better job of providing assistants to departments in need. I know they do a lot of shifting around to save jobs but leave some departments hanging with out a lot of support for the department.

I worked at Ferris State University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

For a university - leadership pretty accessible. Friendly and helpful staff and faculty. Small town feel - many people have been there ten years or more. Not overly bureaucratic. Room for self initiative. A lot of really good "teachers".

    Cons

Lots of interim management. A bit adversarial in union negotiations. On the other hand - union was unnecessarily combative. President made a lot of noise when he came in about being real collaborative and seeking the voice of staff and faculty. Mostly smoke and mirrors - sought the advice, but ignored it as best i can tell.

    Advice to Management

Deans have got to be held more accountable and more of an advocate for their staff and faculty. A bit of the King of the Silo effect.
