    Pros

The engineers are wonderful intelligent friendly amazing people. The environment is relaxed, the people are incredibly easy to work with. The technology is interesting.

    Cons

I make slightly more money than my local bartender. HR negotiates extremely aggressively - especially if you are young or foreign. 1.8 years with no raise. Bonuses were cancelled company-wide despite positive gross margin. Forced PTO means you don't actually get PTO. People coming over from China are amazed at how strict our firewall is. We protect IP at the cost of innovation. I watched Finisar hire a young man who has a Masters in Electrical Engineering as an intern ($20/hr.). This happened June 2015. Finisar has become a retirement plan for a select group of people. All others are suffering wage compression.

    Advice to Management

You are suffering from a staff that is too old. If you want to stay pace with the valley, you need to seriously consider investing in youth. People don't feel valued when you pay them table scraps.

    Pros

A lot of the peers there are fairly easy to work with

    Cons

The Directors there are fanatical. They find a red herring to chase and when their big blown out goose chase fails the blame all the subordinates. They will blame anyone to take the heat off themselves

    Advice to Management

    Grow up

    Pros

People at Finisar are very nice and company is trying hard to keep it this way. I heard from several people that it's so imporatnt fot them that they would be reluctant to switch company even if somebody else would offer them a 10-15% higher salary. Company currently is number one in the world in terms of market share of optical components ( modules). Senior management is generally resonable. Most of the times they do smart things. unfortunately, when they do make mistakes, mistakes are terrible and have negative influence on company's valuation ( read stock price) for years. That's it

    Cons

Number one problem is lack of career opportunites. Because US R&D head count basically stays constant over years and all manufacturing side has been moved overseas, there are essentically no career oppotunities at Finisar US. Second problem is a broken business model. Finisar sells optical components to large companies. Cisco is number 1 or number 2. While Finisar is constantly struggling to be profitable, Cisco, HP and other brands resell Finisar products to their customers for literally 10 times of what they pay to Finisar. It certanly makes it very hard for Finisar to become profitable. Stiff competition does not make it easier. Plus, history of M&A shows Finisar senior management beleives it's competitors are always have superior technology. Only after deal is done managers realize price they paid was too steep. It happened 4-5 times and apparanetely management learned nothing

    Advice to Management

Think twice about new M&A. Expand into new areas like Test & Services

    Pros

You get a lot of challenging work, which you will thoroughly enjoy. Very supportive peers. You can be very comfortable to ask anything you need assistance with. Good learning opportunities.Good work-life balance.

    Cons

There's a huge political conundrum on board, and a lot of internal bickering in upper management. HR policies are pathetic, and sometimes it makes you wonder how can people be so cynical of employees. You'll get an impression that the company treats its employees as second-class citizens. Too many shutdowns, forced leaves, and that is particularly disturbing when you had saved your leaves for another planned chore.

    Advice to Management

Being a little considerate of your employees doesn't cost much, it in-fact pays for itself in terms of employee satisfaction, and motivation. Appreciation of an achievement, when it is due, brings out the best in him, each passing day. The environ nowadays is such, that it is considered as an achievement in itself to resign from Finisar. This should be a little more worrisome for management, if they are really concerned about the *functional* elements of the company, besides color tags on ID cards.
