This is the weirdest job ever

I worked at First Republic (CA)

    Pros

Good pay. They pay you well.

    Cons

Everything else was horrible. Management, people, system, computer, guideline (there is no guideline actually)...

    Pros

    Puts clients first
    [Most] employees are friendly
Tries to be unlike typical banks

    Cons

Culture is not consistent across all departments
Not all employees are treated the same - there is a clear hierarchy and bankers reign supreme
Employee benefits are not in keeping with the market

    Advice to Management

Follow the example set by leaders like Gary Kelly and treat ALL of your employees better than your clients (instead of the other way around) and your employees will return the favor and take care of the clients.

    Pros

Peers and co-workers can be really wonderful, cheap cafe, great benefits

    Cons

management in deposit services is terrible. They sweep problems away instead of addressing them. They have hire individuals into management roles who only do their bidding instead of helping the folks on the team. If you're going to work for this team stay on the client facing team not the other as the management is stronger on that side. The golden child of current BSA/AML functions is condescending and rude AND is dating one of the individuals within her purview. There is no concern for the well being of the staff and when complaints are made they are quickly squashed. The team plays favorites while the majority of the team takes the brunt of the work and verbal abuse.

    Advice to Management

Don't hide problems. Take care of your people. People from top really need to really spend time with the people below. Don't hide your issues, take care of them! Really look at the line managers on your teams and the bosses that seem to protect or hide their inadequacies.

This company is experiencing a lot of changes and do not have the systems in place to support the new regulations.

    Pros

-For the most part colleagues work hard and are kind
-Some senior managers still seem to care about the well being of the employees
-If you work hard and your manager is decent, you can be rewarded well in terms of comp
-CEO is smart and seems to legitimately care about his company and the people working in it

    Cons

-Promote individuals in high profile roles with no relevant background in the field
-A culture that encourages backstabbing to move up and get what you need
-No work life balance, it is almost frowned upon if you only work an 8 hour day
-Certain groups are favored and given the green light to do whatever they want which can cause employees in other departments to be disrespectful to those they think are "beneath" them

    Advice to Management

Listen to the individuals that have helped build the Bank, not just the new "shiny" managers. Newer management encourages a self-serving attitude and in turn encourages employees to consistently back-stab. Lead by example, don't throw other departments or former leaders under the bus constantly. Encourage managers to think what is best for the company, not what is best for them...this only hurts all of the employees and morale.

    Pros

The bank is full of good people, and the subsidized cafe is a nice thing to have. Benefits aren't too terrible, either.

    Cons

There are LOTS of politics, and unless you're willing to drink the Kool-Aid you're going to be shut out. The company rarely has it's worker bees' best interests in mind and is always looking for ways to get double the work for low compensation. Bizarre managerial priorities make this a frustrating company to work for.

    Advice to Management

Compensate your employees better and get their input before making drastic changes. Live up to the company values cited time and time again and make this a rewarding and fun place to work.

Uhm. Well. If you like to strut your stuff, because you work for a big so called important place. This will be the place for you!

    Cons

Very racist. Watch out if you are black! Lots of racist jokes and remarks.

    Advice to Management

Try really know who are hiring. Know their likes, dislikes and interests ... si, you won't be surprised when they go to a different career direction.

    Pros

Base salary and bonus opportunity are decent. Locations can be awesome depending on which office you work from. The CEO Jim Herbert is well-respected. If you're looking for a 9-5 job that won't be too challenging, this could be the place for you.

    Cons

NEPOTISM: Many unqualified people here got internships, vendor contracts, even VP titles because of who they know or are related to.
COMPLACENCY: Everyone around here has rose colored glasses, just assumes the best way to success is to stay exactly the same. Few people take any initiative to do new things to stir things up or take this company to the next level

    Advice to Management

1.) Start hiring qualified people, not just your best friend's wife/daughter/nephew/etc. 2.) Offer better benefits. The best and the brightest talent require more than a paycheck. We want flexible work schedules, community giving programs, tuition reimbursement, and more. 3.) Understand that there are a lot of lazy people in the ranks who have no desire to take initiative to take this business to the next level.
