I worked at First Republic (CA) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Has a great reputation within the community and high customer retention. The support staff is superb and a joy to work with.

    Cons

The company has grown tremendously in the last few years, and management was not well prepared for the rapid growth. The company's technology is about 15 years behind the times and now they are struggling to catchup. In an effort to upgrade their systems without demolishing their bottom line they have been cutting corners and alienating their employees. Turnover has never been higher and moral has never been lower.

    Advice to Management

Value your support staff as much as you do your sales staff. Without your support staff, nothing will get done!

I have been working at First Republic (CA) full-time

    Pros

Very nice people. Great central urban locations (FiDi SF, Midtown East NYC, Century City LA).

    Cons

Systems out of date, culture out of date, VERY short staffed! No personal, management learning growth available. No flex schedules (very old world) and no true HR function.

    Advice to Management

Invest in manager and employee learning. Invest in technical training for your emplyees. Centralize HR and create a robust shared service function to help people learn, grow and navigate the company. Wake up! 2015, embrace flex working.

    Pros

    Easy access to public transportation

    Cons

Conservative, archaic, lack of accountability, egotistically driven

    Advice to Management

Keep your Management in line. What some of the directors and VPs get away with is despicable. Your staff is not valued or respected but instead is driven to satisfy your some of your egotistical and machismo Directors/VPs.

    Pros

Bank has good reputation as being a high net worth customer bank.

    Cons

Management solely focused on stock price and cutting costs, not on customer service. Bank is hypocritical as it outwardly acts like it is focused on customers, but doesn't give employees the staffing or resources to provide good customer service. Environment has changed internally as now that the bank is bigger, there are too many poliitics.

    Advice to Management

Focus on building the business through adequate staffing, not on stock metrics.

    Pros

Puts clients first [Most] employees are friendly Tries to be unlike typical banks

    Cons

Culture is not consistent across all departments Not all employees are treated the same - there is a clear hierarchy and bankers reign supreme Employee benefits are not in keeping with the market

    Advice to Management

Follow the example set by leaders like Gary Kelly and treat ALL of your employees better than your clients (instead of the other way around) and your employees will return the favor and take care of the clients.

I have been working at First Republic (CA) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Peers and co-workers can be really wonderful, cheap cafe, great benefits

    Cons

management in deposit services is terrible. They sweep problems away instead of addressing them. They have hire individuals into management roles who only do their bidding instead of helping the folks on the team. If you're going to work for this team stay on the client facing team not the other as the management is stronger on that side. The golden child of current BSA/AML functions is condescending and rude AND is dating one of the individuals within her purview. There is no concern for the well being of the staff and when complaints are made they are quickly squashed. The team plays favorites while the majority of the team takes the brunt of the work and verbal abuse.

    Advice to Management

Don't hide problems. Take care of your people. People from top really need to really spend time with the people below. Don't hide your issues, take care of them! Really look at the line managers on your teams and the bosses that seem to protect or hide their inadequacies.

I have been working at First Republic (CA) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-For the most part colleagues work hard and are kind -Some senior managers still seem to care about the well being of the employees -If you work hard and your manager is decent, you can be rewarded well in terms of comp -CEO is smart and seems to legitimately care about his company and the people working in it

    Cons

-Promote individuals in high profile roles with no relevant background in the field -A culture that encourages backstabbing to move up and get what you need -No work life balance, it is almost frowned upon if you only work an 8 hour day -Certain groups are favored and given the green light to do whatever they want which can cause employees in other departments to be disrespectful to those they think are "beneath" them

    Advice to Management

Listen to the individuals that have helped build the Bank, not just the new "shiny" managers. Newer management encourages a self-serving attitude and in turn encourages employees to consistently back-stab. Lead by example, don't throw other departments or former leaders under the bus constantly. Encourage managers to think what is best for the company, not what is best for them...this only hurts all of the employees and morale.
