I have been working at First Republic (CA) full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    - Work life balance is generally good (depends on department)
    - Salary is good, raises are ok, end of year bonuses are great (from what I've heard)
    - Work environment is friendly and building is nice...not a big sea of cubicles
    - Accommodate training opportunities
    - Great leadership...Bank strategy is simple to understand and maintain unlike "big banks"
    - Bank is growing and has room for more growth
    - Eagle Cafe is subsidized food; few other perks ($65 cell reimbursement)

    Cons

    - Financial Industry comes with high-scrutiny from regulators, which can mean putting out last minute fire drills
    - Have to hold all discretionary trading accounts with the Bank and their fees are high for the average person who likes to do some moderate trading.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Continue to focus on quality of life for employees (add perks like wellness plans, higher salary raises...even though bonuses are great)
    - Focus on data infrastructure to support growth of bank

I worked at First Republic (CA) full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Compensation was above average; culture was generally supportive of a healthy work-life balance.

    Cons

Organizational structure and multiple layers of systems contributed to inefficiencies and strained working relationships between groups.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support employees' requests and need for professional development regardless of their level of employment.

I have been working at First Republic (CA)

    Pros

-Members of the management team do care about their employees and their well being
    -Subsidized Cafe
-Co-workers can be wonderful to work with and can be collaborative
-There can be growth if you work hard
-Company has great values, but not necessarily always followed.

    Cons

-Some senior managers do not care at all about the well being of their employees
-We are a fast paced environment and often hire individuals who may get the job done, but are not the right personality fit. Recently, we have been hiring people who get around by cutting corners and stepping on people, which does not fit with the values of the company
-The company does a bad job on promoting people based on how hard they work or skill set.
-Our company strives to be the best in customer service, which is wonderful, but at the same time it causes there to be a minimal work life balance for those who do their jobs well. There is a work life balance for some jobs in the company and for those who do not do their job well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to really look at the new management you are bringing into the group. You will continuously lose your strongest employees if you hire managers who are only concerned with metrics, numbers, or how they look to their bosses and above. Your people are your strongest assets.

I have been working at First Republic (CA) full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great employees, fun atmosphere, limited bureaucracy. Make what you want of your career here - you aren't placed into a box and can only stay put or move up on that one track, you can make the most of your career and do whatever you want to do.

    Cons

Basically no work-life balance. Needs to start to be more competitive with the rest of the job industry in allowing flex-time/personal days/work from home benefits/etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want First Republic to act like a start-up an attract entrepreneurial individuals, you need to offer the same perks that those other companies offer.

I have been working at First Republic (CA) full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Everyone who comes to work at First Republic has their own experience. I personally feel like this is a place where you can get out of it what you put into it. If you come here and work hard and show effort and focus on your own work and not what other people are doing you can fit in and be noticed.

In the 3 years I've been here I've felt that my efforts were noticed and rewarded. Do what it takes to get the job done.

I've worked with staff at all levels of the organization and at every level there are people that believe in the culture they preach and sincerely care about living it.

I love it here and hope that I can stay here a long time. I have plenty of opinions on things, but that being said below, what I've gotten and received with First Republic is a result of my own efforts and work ethic.

    Cons

If you are someone that likes to fake their way through the work day, or spend time in office politics and complaining, this isn't the place for you. The reality is that low producing people will be replaced and that should motivate you to try harder. This his how it is at any company trying to improve and grow.

No company on the planet has all if its ducks in a perfect row. This company has gone through a lot and is working out the kinks and working through the growing pains. But the future is solid and the organization is as stable as they come.

Adjusting to the growth and maintaining the desired culture can be a struggle. Possibly a few misfires on the hiring side at a variety of levels. A bit of a disconnect between upper management and staff. Hopefully things to improve.

The positive spin on these cons is that they are trying to become more self-aware of these issues and working to hopefully improve on them. I've seen some of these already happen and hopefully it will continue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on team building. Make your staff care more and have more of a vested interest in the work they are doing. Manage with the bank's cultural goals in mind every day. Lead by example.

Include all levels of your staff in the discussion leading up to changes that effect them. It makes them understand the changes that eventually happen to policy and procedures. Be more transparent at all levels and more specific.

Communicate more and have more skip-level meetings. Close the gap between levels of management and workers.

Put a greater emphasis on cross-department teamwork and reduce siloing.

Current Employee - Preferred Banker in San Francisco, CA
Current Employee - Preferred Banker in San Francisco, CA

I have been working at First Republic (CA) full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Low stress environment, generous bonuses, most accomplished bankers from all big banks highly motivated to provide clients with a better experience than competitor banks.

    Cons

Very slow at certain offices, can go an entire day helping only a handful of clients. Earning a promotion is very difficult even for consistently exceeding goals because the bank is growing much slower than other banks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be afraid to move into the 21st century and innovate. Yes, the bank has grown tremendously mostly due to organic growth but it's time to take a few risks and explore other types of businesses rather than stick to what's worked for two and half decades. What happens is you begin to lose your most talented employees who are more ambitious than the bank can provide opportunities for.

    Pros

Great team hiring process. Incentives are great compared to other boutique banks.

    Cons

Lack of career development unless you know one of the executives and/or their close team members

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promotions, lack of career development is what puts this company behind compared to others.
