    The people are great

    Registered Nurse (Current Employee)
    Burlington, VT

ProsMost of the staff is friendly and supportive, depending upon which unit you work on. We have a nursing union within the hospital.

ConsDon't count on getting a decent raise as a nurse- the raises don't keep up with the cost of living. There isn't much competition in the area. You can't park on site. You have to park at a satellite parking lot and ride in on an ancient yellow school bus. It can add 20-30 minutes to your commute.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease grab a pair of scrubs and follow a nurse on the floor once in a while. I have never seen a manager on the floor working.

A good organization to work for.

    Staff Nurse III (Current Employee)
    Burlington, VT

    ProsCaring management and descent benefits.

ConsThere is a gap between what upper management sees as a need for clinical practice and what clinician see as a need. Not a very effective communication between levels of management and staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove managerial viability and the ability to communicate.

    Staff Nurse

    Registered Nurse (Former Employee)
    Burlington, VT

ProsGood nurse to patient ratios, good benefiits, 12 hr shifts (can be pro or con.)

ConsYou are just another number to them. Had really awful managers at the time, this is obviously variable by unit. You are always being pointed out for errors and areas to improve, rarely praised for all the hard work you do there.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave some understanding of how hard the day to day job is for your employees and give some recognition for it.

    "the only game in town"

    RN (Former Employee)
    Burlington, VT

ProsIt is the only hospital in the area and therefore pays the highest salaries for nurses.
Great professional and knowledgeable staff .
Patients come to FAHC from all over VT and upper NY state.
FAHC is an academic medical center with 430 + beds and a level 1 trauma center.

ConsThere is no real clinical ladder in place for registered nurses.
The hospital was unionized (RN's and LPN's) recently due to a variety of issues...staffing levels, low salaries, overtime, etc. Morale, hopefully, has increased since I left in 2006.
Working with the residents and interns can be problematic depending on your point of view......

Advice to Senior ManagementTalk to staff and really communicate what is happening and what is projected to happen to FAHC>

    Moving in the Right Direction

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Burlington, VT

ProsFletcher Allen Health Care is well known as one of Vermont's largest employers. There are a lot of growth opportunities at Fletcher Allen Health Care. The best thing about this organization is the number of different jobs available that will open up. Fletcher Allen encourages its employees to stick with a job for 6 months to a year before transferring to a different department, but during those 6 months to a year you can get some valuable experience for future jobs. This place is great especially because the healthcare industry is a safe and dependable industry to be in. Great place to work for Vermonters!

ConsThe parking situation at Fletcher Allen is TERRIBLE. Employees that work at the Main Hospital as well as University Health Care are forced to park in satellite lots and ride shuttles (school buses) to work.

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage more growth for employees within in the organization. Offer better compensation packages for tuition reimbursements.

Great people, difficult economy to achieve the greatness it has potential for

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsReally nice and caring people for an academic medical center. Very good salary and benefits for the region.

ConsShort sighted senior leaders. Because people generally want to stay in Vermont, they won't make tough decisions that may make them unpopular.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more visible and get in the trenches with the people who do the work.

    Good place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsFor a hospital of this size, Fletcher Allen is a good place to work. Patient care is and has been a priority for the past several years. Each department is different in the employees experience. Some departments have better management or leadership and employees are happier, while other departments have a completely different take on the hospitals direction. Our department has a good relationship with the department manager, supervisors and educators. Some of our staff is involved in quality improvement initiatives for patient care as well as having a say in new therapies and products used for patient care.

ConsOne of the big drawbacks is the union vs. management conflict. Especially during the union contract negotiations. As a open mined union member, I think both sides make the situation worse than it needs to be. Not really work related, but weather in Vermont is what most people who move here are not prepared for. Winters are long, cold and grey. If you do not like outdoor activities, especially in the winter, Vermont is not a good place to choose.

Advice to Senior ManagementOften times the upper management does not see or appreciate what happens at the patient care level. I feel they know we provide good patient care and want us to provide good patient care, but finances always seem take a priority. I do understand that margins are important for the financial health of the institution, but there are many ways to control costs so that patient care is always the priority.
