Okay in a downturn

Engineering Manager (Current Employee)
Milpitas, CA

I have been working at Flextronics

ProsPay is not bad. Ability to work away from the office.

ConsPolitics. See a lot of people being hired as long as they are the same nationality of the hiring manager. Same for promotions. Seems like upper management doe not notice or does not care.

Advice to Senior ManagementFor the development side of the business, more patience is required. Seems like you talk about Design, but mostly are interested in the CM business. Do something to shut down the cronyism. One business unit shuts down, the CEO moves to another business unit and starts hiring the same people back from the unit that failed.

Classic Contract Manufacturing Environment

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Milpitas, CA

I have been working at Flextronics

ProsExposure to a variaty of products. Good environment for a highly tactical person. Fairly easy to get a job there. If you are one that can shut-up and follow orders, you will do well here.

ConsManagement lacks depth of knowledge and does not demonstrate ability to strategize. Very reactive environment. Minimal focus on long term solutions. Highly political.

Advice to Senior ManagementWalk your talk when it comes to customer focus. Think more strategically and utilize more of the talent in the middle and lower ranks.

Troubleshoot cellphones while reaching daily sales quota.

Customer Service Technician (Current Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I have been working at Flextronics

ProsThey take good care of their employees when you're first hired, expences paid for, training for the first month. Several raises for the first year.

ConsThey will suck you in after your hire date with a promising location of satisfying range, once they have you they willl have you work at farther distances. Had no supportive senior management for leadership.

Sales & Business Dvp are not compensated for landing / awarded new business like other EMS companies.

Director of Business Development (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA

I have been working at Flextronics

ProsAggressiveness to grow revenue & new customers

Conslack of leadership direction on what types of business. Leadership is very narrow focused

Advice to Senior ManagementLook into a leadership growth programs. Flex is training good people who leave the company because of lack of growth / promotions. This hurts the company long term as competitors learn pricing, business & solution strategies

Service and troubleshoot the devices of Verizon Wireless Customers

Customer Service Technician (Current Employee)

I have been working at Flextronics

Pros-The opportunities for Career Growth
-Employees have the potential to make quick advancements in the company
-The nature of the business offers Job Security to everyone involved

Cons- The amount of pay is not equal to the amount of responsibilities required from technicians
- Stressful
- Extremely fast paced and demanding retail environment
- Unreasonable sales goals for technicians who never agreed to do sales upon offer of
  employment.
- Constant changes in rules and regulations
- Employees are held accountable for circumstances that are beyond their control. Ex: If a
customer is unhappy with Verizon Wireless pricing, the technician is responsible for making the
customer happy even though the technician has absolutely no authority or power to change
  Verizon Wireless pricing.

Advice to Senior Management- Stop holding technicians accountable for circumstances beyond their control
- Be upfront about the requirements and responsibilities of the job during the interview stage and
not after the employee is hired.
- Technicians are not salespeople.

Competent, cost cutting machine. Not much support for employees

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Flextronics

ProsFlex senior management has a good feel for business conditions and is relatively proactive in responding to market opportunities. Good at cutting costs to the bone (and sometimes beyond). Conservative financial management. Will be a survivor in the current economic climate.

ConsCommunication below VP level is spotty, and the reasons for decisions are not well explained. Decisions sometimes appear to be arbitrary and not thought through. Very little input is requested from lower levels, nor used if it is provided. Way too many VP "cooks in the kitchen", and the organization routinely leaves conflicts between regions, business units, functional organizations, etc. ambiguous and unresolved. Getting a decision seems to have more to do with the force of the personalities involved rather than strong overall direction from the top.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure people actually live and follow the culture that is being preached. State which side of your matrix organization is the "strong side", and ensure it can resolve conflicts. Do more to ensure that communication is complete and effective all of the way down the management chain.

Hard to find a strong career growth track here

Program Manager (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA

I have been working at Flextronics

ProsRelative to other large public companies, there is a good level of flexibility (systems, approvals, etc) to allow people to get their job done. Collaboration among team members is also healthy.

ConsI see too much dead weight (employees not adding enough value to company) which is tolerated and allowed to continue. At the same time high performers are not rewarded enough. Generally a much better results-based performance system is needed within the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementAfter new strategic processes / systems are 'deployed', ensure they are actually implemented and maintained (as intended), by holding management in the GM / VP range accountable.

Communication lags

SMT Machine Programmer (Current Employee)
Milpitas, CA

I have been working at Flextronics

ProsIf you are looking for good benefit, Flextronics does provide good health, stock option, and 401k with 100% matching plan.

ConsFlextronics have poor communication bettween management level and different teams. Lets say there are some issue on production floor, it would take the manager atleast a day later to get notify from the floor supervisor. Another problem, unless your working in the office. If you are on the floor, you'll be working on one of their 2 shifts. 5am to 1.30pm or 1.30pm to 11pm. I happen to be in the 5am shift, there are no way around, programmer have to stay whenever machine operate for support as need.

Advice to Senior ManagementReally have to work on the communication bettween management level and different teams.
