depends on the department you work in

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Florida International University

ProsBenefits, Tuition reimbursement, flexible work hours for students, sometimes great bosses and coworkers depending on your department. Great for a first job after graduating.

Consgiant bureaucracy that doesn't reward hard work. Organizational structure reduces accountability and fosters a "not my job" attitude.

Advice to Senior ManagementSalary and promotion should be based on performance, not seniority or pay-scales.
This is demotivating and encourages people to only work hard enough to keep their jobs.

I was very excited to become a part of the university Advancement Division

Director of Membership and Development (Former Employee)
Miami Beach, FL

I worked at Florida International University full-time for more than a year

ProsExcellent Team, state of the art database, supportive atmosphere

ConsMerger/Take-over of Jewish Museum of Florida ( my then employer) took a hostile turn as leaders could not agree and move forward efficiently with necessary tasks, hindering productivity.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior Management at FIU should take control of the Jewish Museum and immediately implement processes and resolve internal conflicts that created a hostile environment. (mergers are never easy)

Generally relaxing experience working here

Teaching Assistant (Former Employee)
Miami, FL

I worked at Florida International University part-time for more than a year

Pros- flexible hours, only 20 hours/weekly since is a part-time job
- not difficult since they are mostly undergraduate courses

Cons- the management is questionable, workload is not distributed fairly among all TAs (I got upset because I was given way more tasks than some others, what makes it worse is that they even add new assignments to you in the middle of the semester!)
- no extra benefits

Advice to Senior Management- make job assignment more fairly
- do not change or add tasks to TA arbitrarily

do not work for the college of business

Advisor (Current Employee)
Miami, FL

I have been working at Florida International University full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGreat benefits and A LOT of PTO, academic environment, opportunity to help others

Consthe supervisor's "pets" can do as they please. no recognition for the those who truly work hard. College of business administration is corrupt and a mess and neither the president nor HR cares.

Advice to Senior ManagementShape up before you lose all your hard and intelligent workers.

Good working environment, bad HR department

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Florida International University

ProsGood benefits and opportunity for growing

ConsSome salaries are not competitive market salaries
HR takes extremely long amounts of time in the hiring process up to 6 months doing paperwork

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed a better system or more competent people that work faster and know what they are doing, this includes looking for realistic positions and salaries

Can be unbearable and can be great

Coordinator (Former Employee)
Miami, FL

I worked at Florida International University full-time for more than 5 years

ProsFamily environment, work life balance depends heavily on unit and leadership, great benefits and great educational benefits...work schedules are flexible... Made some life long friends

ConsI worked at college of business since September 2012, there was no work life balance unless you were part of the chosen few selected to succeed. Environment is very gossip like, worse than high school... And it's like that everywhere... Favorites get far faster than hard working people .... I had a very unprofessional environment and those who got ahead were rude... You find a lot of young unprofessional people trying to climb the ladder...

Advice to Senior ManagementPay more attention about what's going on in your team... Don't just focus on one person, give everyone a possibility to succeed... Don't just get the story from your favs listen to everyone
