I worked at Florida Power & Light as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I could ask anyone at the plant a question and they were thrilled to explain things to me because I was the only intern. Formed more intimate relationship with employers and advisers because the most amount of people on site was maybe 30 people maximum at a time.

    Cons

I was the only intern, so there wasn't a lot of collaborative work with someone of my status. Also, technical work was minimal at the power plant. Job was more focused on project management.

I worked at Florida Power & Light full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay, nice facilities, mostly good people. Advancement is not difficult if you are motivated. There is plenty of training offered. Benefits packages are above average.

    Cons

No work/life balance. You are pretty much expected to stay at your desk until all tasks are finished. Weekends and holidays will have to be worked because deadlines will not be moved. Also plan on moving vacations if they don'd line up with company needs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make work/life balance a priority (more than just words). Hire more people if needed.

I worked at Florida Power & Light full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great team members, people enjoy what they do and go the extra mile to make sure things are done right. Benefits are not too bad and management is workin gon work-life balance

    Cons

Employees are not being valued. Salaries are not matching market and they are takng advantage of the job market situation. Unfortutely when the job market gets better, a lot of employees will leave and knowledge and experience will be out the door. Too bad for a company that used to be really good with it's employees and was open to professional growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees. They are the ones who are dealing with the problems and know where the real problem is.

I have been working at Florida Power & Light full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good benefits, secure job Close to South Florida. Its decent money but since theres no other competition, they low ball you.

    Cons

Poor work-life balance, not many training opportunities, too much work for no compensation. Seems like you have to be tied to your phone anywhere you go and at any given moment you have to go and attend work matters.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Strike a better work/life balance, stop being so cheap and pay what the workers have earned. Working here stresses you out and the company does not engage in extra-curricular, team building activities.

I have been working at Florida Power & Light as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Great location, structured teams, Great Work life balance and perks

    Cons

Most of the new software developer start as contractors, 11 months of contract followed by project bound contract for 2 years with no raise or no bonuses before turning to full time employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your Software Engineers by being more transparent.

I worked at Florida Power & Light as a contractor

    Pros

Good benefits and very nice people to work with.

    Cons

Everyone is in meetings all day long. They have meetings ABOUT meetings. Seems very unproductive and quite frankly, like the old boy network. Outdated dress code...in many ways they are still acting like they are a utility company from the 80's vs an energy company in the year 2014.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lighten up...corporate America has changed and you need to change with it.

I worked at Florida Power & Light full-time

    Pros

Great pay and fantastic benefits. The job is as described.

    Cons

Shiftwork is the worse part of this job. Must work all three shifts on a rotating schedule. This becomes very tiring very quickly. Also hard to maintain a social life on such a schedule A lot of downtime, though some may like and even prefer this. Also, it is very unionized, so it comes with strong union mentality. Again, some may like this, though I prefer ununionized work.
