A good company to work you, EXPECT during a downturn !

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Fluor

Pros- Good Slaries overall.
- Raises are based on performance and not so much pleasing shareholders.
- A global presence allowing favorable work assignments in general.

Cons- No substantial effort to keep emplyees during downturns
- A jump from middle to upper management is usually a long painfull process
- Excessive submission to Client's requests in terms of deliverables, especially timing.
- Career development plans and programs that look good on paper but hard to execute

Advice to Senior Management- There should be an allocation of funds for continuous training and career development plans during the downturns.
- There is nothing wrong with getting kick-out of a project by the client for trying to do the "right" thing

ProsUnique work schedule. Every other Friday off. You work 36 hours one week, 44 hours another.

Cons45 minute mandated company wide lunch breaks. This didn't provide ample time if one needed to use lunch break for errands.

Advice to Senior ManagementAsk your employees for suggestions or comments.

Not bad, but not great

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Fluor

ProsWhen work was coming in there was plenty to do and I learned a lot during this time. The knowledge sharing is second to none and I never felt bad asking any questions that I had.

ConsIt seems that the market was overestimated by our management. Our bids were not competitive and now we are paying for it with layoffs.

Advice to Senior ManagementKnow the market better and try to share some work between offices. Other divisions of Fluor have been doing well, but we have not been able to benefit from this.

Fluor

Administrative Assistant (Current Employee)
Sugar Land, TX

I have been working at Fluor

ProsFluor is a great place to work.
The TOWP (Time Off With Pay) is an excellent benefit.
The 9/80 work schedule is great, with every other Friday off.

ConsIt is very cylical. When it is booming it is great. When there is a down-turn it is no so good. However, I do believe Fluor tries to keep GOOD employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementTell them what is going on.... Get more work... In order to keep your employees. Other wise the the Other EPC companies will hire all of your well trained people. I've heard this old saying many times on the street: "Fluor trains them, we hire them".

Employees are the driving horse of the company.

ProsCompetitive salary offered. Excellent Knowledge Online tool.

ConsHigh turn-over rate. Lack flexibility. Separate office locations resulted in lack of employee interactions and unity.

Advice to Senior ManagementUnite employees from different offices. Low moral means low or bad quality productivity.

ProsGood Compay to work for. Managers are very comprehensive and understaning of personal situations. Very family oriented. Good opportunities to work international.

ConsYearly employe assesments are not taken a seriously as they should. A company like this should offer more benefits to employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of potential employees in terms of compensation and career growth. A lot of potential employees around that have not been recognized.

Great place to work when the economy is booming, otherwise get ready to be laid off

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Sugar Land, TX

I have been working at Fluor

Pros- good pay, especially on overseas assignments
- excellent benefits
- flexible hours
- opportunity for travel
- online support (knowledge online)

Cons- no training
- raises are too small
- frequent lay-offs
- disconnect between higher management and other employees
- tendency to overstaff projects resulting in redundancy of some job functions

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to provide better consistency in work flow. Keep more design jobs in the States, instead of exporting them overseas

Top employer for engineers

Technical Editor (Former Employee)
Irvine, CA

I worked at Fluor

ProsFluor is a huge company: that's both its strength and its weakness. The company employs thousands of engineers of numerous types (chemical, process, piping, etc.). Most employees are able to maintain a decent work-life balance, the pay is good, benefits hold up comparatively well within the job market, and the workplace environment is casual and welcoming.

ConsOwing to the enormousness of the company, the mid-managerial levels have swelled to silly proportions. At times, the bureaucratic stodginess almost resembles that of a large government agency, with all its pointless and tiresome regulations and lack of movement on even simple requests. In addition, Fluor's employment model is built on a project basis: Engineers (and support staff) move from project to project---literally move, sometimes from the Irvine campus to the Aliso Viejo campus to the Long Beach campus. For those employees who seek a more stable long term in a single place, this can prove problematic. Another problem is with the engineering and construction industry itself: it's typically seasonal. This means that you might not pick up another project immediately after you finish your current project, which would force you to collect unemployment until Fluor calls you back in again.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe 1970s model of huge encrustations of mid-management is obsolescent in this age of post-recession lean and mean. Workers usually do just as well, if not better, without dozens of supervisors to report to. Streamline the managerial model and make everyone happier and more productive.
