“Great Films, but Bad Pay, Politics & Backstabbing at Focus Features.”
I worked at Focus Features
Pros – The body of work is better than pretty much any other film distribution company. Also, the senior management is quite talented and even inspiring, but the petty politics of midlevel managers really gets in the way.
Cons – As noted above, the politics. Good ideas from underlings are either stolen by midlevel managers or negated due to perceived and misplaced priorities. Also, the work/life balance is pretty far off, especially considering the terrible pay (this is true of the entire industry however; simple supply and demand).
Advice to Senior Management – Great job picking films, however innovation in processes is discouraged and could dramatically help your bottom line. However, the comforting "way we've always done things" takes too much precedence over doing things in new and better ways. Watch out or you might get lapped.
