work at another chain

DSD Receiver (Current Employee)
Charlotte, NC

I have been working at Food Lion full-time for more than 10 years

Prosyou get real life experiences

Consmanagement do not work with you if you are trying to better yourself, they make it hard if they think you make to much money and cut your hours down to nothing. if you call HR they will inform your manager about what was discussed and retaliation is given. men are given more respect and get all the hours. men are hired in off the street even if there is a woman in the store that is capable of doing the same job. management stick together no mater what the situation is. this company does not take care of their employees...

Advice to Senior Managementget a degree and stop being Chauvinistic.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Good for temporary work or in school but would not recommend to anybody.

Assistant Customer Service Manager (Former Employee)
Mount Airy, NC

I worked at Food Lion full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat with working around school or college schedules.
Meeting new people and making friends.

ConsManagement on all levels is terrible. They give no uniformed direction and all want it their way.
Pay is horrible. 1% raises no matter how excellent your work is at No benefits or bonus. Corporate & upper managment keep the bonuses and perks to theirselves.
Expect way too much from employees.
Work environment is too demanding for the wages they pay.
Corporate managers are stuck up pricks.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive the associates something to smile about. (Increased wages, perks, bonuses, etc)
Give more hours to departments so they can do their jobs effieciently.
Don't give in to the 30 hour ACA rules. Fight for the employee not the government.

Worst company to work for.

Cashier (Former Employee)
Williamsburg, VA

I worked at Food Lion part-time for more than a year

ProsNothing that I can think of, (and I've done a lot of thinking)

ConsThe pay is terrible, We never got any hours, Any time a customer complained and it wasn't your fault we still got written up, the managers have bad attitudes, I never got a raise after working there almost a year and a half, very little room for growth.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet morale up among your workers and be polite and courteous to all of the employees.

Terrible

Customer Service Associate (Current Employee)
Durham, NC

I have been working at Food Lion part-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe customers can sometimes be very good people and some of the non managers associate treat each other with respect and kindness. There are days that are really enjoyable and not as stressful.

ConsManagement does not care about you, your safely, well-being, or health. I say this because twice, one I was sick as a dos and knew i should not have been going to work at all tried to call out but was told to come in anyway and while three hours into working passed out in the office, and the second time as my mother was in the hospital and tired to call out but was told i still have to show and my boss didn't care if my mother was well or not because it had nothing to deal with my "physical" self, meaning if i was not hurt or dieing i was still suppose to show up.

Advice to Senior ManagementSome of you people really need to shown how you treat your employees. Maybe I will show up with a spy cam and post on YouTube how bad food lion really is. It number 8 for worse grocery stores and I wonder why.

Stress, workplace harassment and no contact order. Still have to work with employee under these conditions

ACSSM (Current Employee)
Erwin, TN

I have been working at Food Lion full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe customers that shop at our store are what make me keep coming to work. We are a very small mostly retirement type of city, That being able to help them fill there shopping lists, load there groceries in there vehicles. Helping them is where when you come home from work you feel satisfied. Also several department heads and the whole back end off the store have been a pleasure to work with there humor and knowledge has been tremendously helpful.

ConsHaving to wait 1 year for fulltime benefits. Then they disappear on your next check after January 1st. Contacting Human Resources for help with an employee that harassed me. Followed human resources advice took the employee to court and won a no contact order for 1 year except during work? Now having to supervise this employee while his mother and others continue to harass me however they please without any consequences. I really like my job have spent 3 years getting to where I am at now. Overall food lion has treated me in all other matters more than satisfactory. If you find yourself in any similar circumstance I could really use some advice from someone who has been through something like this. How do you supervise someone that you have a no contact order with and undermines your authority on and off the clock without any consequences?

Advice to Senior ManagementI would suggest that managers use the power hours, provide more training guides and aides. Take a stronger stance in situations of this matter 2 coworkers under these circumstances should not have to endure the mental and emotional stress that this creates for the whole store. Our sales have increased over 25% since I was hired , where the other employee spent years in the office with sales declining. Please help employees that need it and take corrective action against employees when and if needed. Share your knowledge and experience with the lower level office assistants and assistant managers. That way we can help our company continue to make every shopping experience for every customer a truly memorable experience that they want to come back daily for all there needs. Work with human resources and make the work environment a pleasant happy one, A happy workplace workforce is a productive workforce.

DO NOT WORK HERE

Produce Associate (Former Employee)
Laurinburg, NC

I worked at Food Lion part-time for less than a year

ProsThere are no pros at this location.

Cons- Lack of management
- I had to figure out how to set up my direct deposit because the personnel manager is lazy.
- You never know what day you're going to work until the very last minute.
- The employees aren't properly trained.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrain your staff because they are clueless. Nobody has a clue what's going on. There is no team work. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

Terrible, boss treated me like crap... Even though I worked hard.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Food Lion

ProsWorking my butt off kept me in shape.

ConsTo many to list. Low pay, low hours, baggers are abused with the work load. Was told the only warm wear I could wear was the official foodlion hoody I had to buy myself. I collected carts in my shirt sleeve foodlion shirt in the snow.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf everyone cared for their employees a little more this company could be a lot better. See Costco as example.
