I worked at Food Lion full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

You need a job. There is little to separate this company from better jobs for all your needs from an employer.

    Cons

1 percent pay raises, employees can not purchase stock, work hours limited, work schedule changes like the wind direction ( management will lie, make two schedules or whatever it takes to get out the door) wwe wrestling is real here, lots of lies and laying blame on the previous management or someone else. Most of the managers are losers as being divorced, drunkened, deceitful, two faced, non educated and they will say anything that sounds good. College grads leave. Management will run you in the ground.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In Chester, SC they need to hire new real estate people to find them a better location. They were in the perfect location years ago and moved. There whole save a buck is going to cost them more than a buck.

I have been working at Food Lion part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of regular customers that are kind and understanding. The stores are nice and kept neat. They're fairly flexible with time off.

    Cons

No benefits for p/t workers. Low pay. Rules are applied differently depending on who you are and how much you brown nose management. Management seems to be more concerned with their own bonuses than running a successful store. There is little that management does that I would say is fair and justified. As others have said, it's who you know, not how hard you work that determines if you get promoted or not.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I've worked in a lot of grocery stores and I've seen a lot of different managers. Good managers lead by example and respect their workers and in turn they get hard work and respect back from their employees. Bad managers think they're "above it all" and don't have to get their hands dirty if they don't want to. Hard work is never rewarded, yet screwing up even in the tiniest little bit will get you threats of being written up. Management at my store is BAD. They are constantly playing little games with people's schedules and time off. Preferential treatment is blatantly obvious. My advice is to TRAIN YOUR MANAGEMENT TEAMS BETTER and get rid of the bad apples.

I worked at Food Lion part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The front end team was friendly for the most part.

    Cons

Very low pay, very busy store/high stress. It felt constantly understaffed, but there was a lot of pressure to get customers through the check-out line as quickly as possible, a lot of times at the expense of customer service and friendly interactions. There was also a bit of bullying of the newer employees by some of the more experienced ones.

    Hire more people

I have been working at Food Lion full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Flexible schedule (depending upon position)
    Most co workers are easygoing

    Cons

Very much a brown nosing approach to getting promoted.
Too much discord between headquarters and the stores themselves (i.e. memos upon memos about B.O.B. and shrink practices. We get it, after 3 years of newsletters, we get it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Visit stores more often. I understand wanting to keep our stock price up, but don't do it at a sacrifice to your employees. Your warehouses are horrendous, you lose more money with their incompetence (i.e. terribly stacked pallets, late trucks cost labor hours of which we don't have much room of extra). Treat us like you used to treat us, encourage advancement through training and care.
