Good place to work, bad place to learn

Liquid Markets Analyst (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsPay is reasonable and hours aren't terrible as long as you are efficient and can get your work done
    People are really nice

ConsWhile the people are really nice there is a really weird culture that isn't social at all. It seems the system has gotten so bureaucratic that a lot of people are leaving for more entrepreneurial environments.
There is no buddy system or training program. They throw you right in and if you make mistakes it is on you.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider starting a more formal training program and more office events so people get to know each other. There is a group of really social interesting people, and a group of people who won't respond to a hello in the hall so more social interactions would make a difference.
Otherwise Fortress has an extremely bright future!

ProsLearn a lot. No politics since everyone is working hard and focusing on their job. CEO actually works the hardest.

    ConsUnstable. Typical for hedge fund.

Like the people, but excessive turnover

Analyst (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsReasonably flexible investment approach, people willing to get creative. There are a number of very smart individuals, not all, but most.

ConsA little unstable, can make jerky reactions to markets and major strategic changes based on temporary market conditions. I was satisfied with my pay package but have heard from a lot of people who weren't.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake it a more consistent environment. Turnover is a killer for a business like this, keep your strongest performing employees, don't lose them over a few dollars of comp, continue to prune the weeds like you do.

    Great experience

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsVery involved and active work environment. A lot of deals pass by your table so you get to acquire an insight into different market cap, sector etc . companies and different valuation and financing methods.

ConsNot very organized and 'one firm' culture is not implemented that well. Different parts of the company ( private equity, hedge fund etc...) are mostly treated as separate entities even when they could be leveraging each other.

Advice to Senior ManagementIn junior levels leadership and mentorship program is adequate . - can be better.
ALso because it is a public company sometimes it is hard to judge senior managements interests.
