Great employer

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Seattle, WA

I worked at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center full-time for more than 10 years

ProsDecent pay for non-profit sector
Great benefits
Supportive, family-friendly environment
Wonderful, caring colleagues
Resources readily available
Incredible organizational history with lifetime careers across scientific/administrative division

ConsLack of formal training for management
Mundane performance review process that lacks teeth
Environment is sometimes too nice with under-performing colleagues not ushered out

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't promote for performance alone - promote for skill to lead and inspire a team. When managers are promoted, make leadership training mandatory.

Great place full of hard-working people

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center full-time

ProsPeople are rewarded for working hard. I observed multiple people navigate their way up through progressively challenging positions taking on increasing responsibility each step of the way.

ConsBeing a large organization with multiple departments and many layers, there are two downsides. First, problem staff have a tendency to stick around much longer than they might in a leaner organization. Second, it is particularly challenging to enact bold changes; there are inherent incentives to thinking small and incrementally.

The Hutch is an excellent place to work.

Project Manager II (Current Employee)
Seattle, WA

I have been working at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe people at the Hutch are, almost to the person, deeply committed, hard working, highly intelligent and very rewarding colleagues. I have grown tremendously at this institution.

ConsThere are very few cons to share. Perhaps two things: the Hutch doesn't pay nearly as well as a for-profit company would. The Hutch is also, because of Federal funding, somewhat at the mercy of the whims of the Congressional budget process.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the wonderful work!

ProsRelaxed workplace, coworkers are easy to get along with, good location, good money, good benefits; just an overall great place to work.
