I worked at Fred Meyer full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good job security. Benefits are great. A variety of work can be done and different shifts are available as well.

    Cons

Lack of communication between management and employees. Management tends to treat any situation like it's an issue and like the employee is in trouble.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat employees like they mean something to the company. And appreciate and acknowledge when employees are doing a good job.

    District Supervision

Former Employee - Management in Spokane, WA

I worked at Fred Meyer full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The opportunity to engage and work with management that lacked prior district supervision. The sense of accomplishment felt when a program or plan that was orchestrated by a district supervisor made a difference, both in increased sales, and simplifying the day to day practices of the managers.

    Cons

VP's that coddled supervisors that routinely acted with immaturity and basically temper tantrums. District personnel that spent the majority of their "on the clock" work responsibilities working on personal business. District staff that repeatedly were unable to be found and clearly unable to perform their job responsibilities according to their job restrictions. A good example of this would be the ability to climb a flight of stairs, or working for an additional company that directly competed with Fred Meyer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider weeding out store supervisors that continue to underperform but make the district staff feel welcome when they visit. A good example would be 214.

    Pros

Paid every week, good hours, good benefits, open door policy

    Cons

Poor Management, Poor Staffing, VERY HIGH stress, no time for family/ friends,
once you become an associate of this company, say goodbye to your sanity & social life.
i was told by ALL management that i was the fastest most accurate worker
(dont be what i was other wise they WILL take advantage of you).
My ex-boss that was transferred to another store was told by the NEWLY PROMOTED MANAGER,
"You dont have to get your hands dirty and touch that, your not on night crew anymore"

    THAT PISSED ME OFF

You are treated like a workhorse....NOT a person

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HIRE A MANAGER that actually WANTS a job/ career and takes it seriously!
since ive been there 7 months, 10 people have VOLUNTARILY QUIT (including myself), due to POOR MANAGEMENT
& management NOT listening to their employess

I have been working at Fred Meyer part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Almost livable wage if you can make it to journeyman status
    Union-mandated 20 hour week minimum
    Wonderful coworkers
    Benefits after 6 months

    Cons

Management often uses intimidation to get people to do work outside job description
Management is often lazy/disconnected from job they're managing and UNWILLING to learn or listen.
Pay is barely enough to make ends meet.
Takes SIX MONTHS for benefits to kick in.
Stingy on OT, even if department is shorthanded
Hard to move up if you don't kiss up, regardless of how hard you may work
Will schedule 10 days in a row frequently
    Unrealistic expectations
The rules often don't apply to everybody (favoritism)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Anyone in management should have to work the position they're managing for an extended period of time. Get your head out of your &** and start helping. Quit trying to assign blame and do the job you're paid so much more than me to do.

I worked at Fred Meyer part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Most fellow employees are really friendly, if they stick around. Turnover is very high so new faces that just disappear. Discount OK but still cheaper elsewhere, unless on sale.

    Cons

Hours/ shifts constantly changing, day by day. Too many chiefs, not enough Indians. If you get along with a boss your a "superstar," but the 1 day your off, and don't come in, your no longer a team player.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Attitude of managers needs to be better. I've witnessed numerous times foul language and threats by senior managers. If they had threatened me with physical violence you'd be short a grocery manager, good thing I quit when I did!

I worked at Fred Meyer full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good work life balance most of the time.

    Cons

Supervisor didn't have experience in supervising and wasn't interested in laws, policies, or job descriptions. Supervisor was demeaning and rude although most everyone who meets her (and does not work for her) thinks she is SO nice. She needed an administrative assistant to keep her organized and some supervisory training. Front end P.I.C.s get more training in supervising humans than she had.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs to be supervision of supervisors in the main office. Mine was getting away with murder because no one was paying attention.

Former Employee - Pharmacy Technician in Salem, OR

I worked at Fred Meyer full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Easy to get hired, good discounts for employees on store items when there is a sale going on

    Cons

HR and management don't back up staff, union involvement makes everything difficult and creates a barrirer between staff and upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop running your employees into the ground. Also, when an employee brings up a serious issue and has written proof of the issue, don't just try to sweep it under the rug and not deal with it.

I have been working at Fred Meyer part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits, easy for most people to schedule time off and get it off. very easy to get and use vacation time, work for the most part is relatively easy.

    Cons

Bad pay, weak union, extremely unprofessional, dishonest management, company will skirt around with part time employees hours to avoid having to give them full time benefits (39 hours, come on), Unpredictable amount of hours (40 hours one week, 20 the next). Managers seem to hire and promote who they knew from other stores more than qualified employees, regionals (management's bosses) are idiot jerks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put yourselves in the shoes of your employees for once.

I have been working at Fred Meyer part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

As an entry level job, the work environment is good. I received three days of training before I ever stepped behind a register on my own. The management treated me fairly and all my fellow workers always seemed pretty relaxed at work. If you work there long enough, they also have fair health benefits.

    Cons

Over hanging corporate restrictions from parent company. Many goals such as speed in a check-stand, are given more attention then customer service. This is my story, even though I never showed up late, or called in sick. My customer service and bagging were both rated above average. But because my performance score, though it was improving, i started at a score of 60 (with 100, being the goal) and when they let me go I was 60 days into my 90 day probationary period and my score was 85. The store director felt my improvement was not significant enough to continue my employment, they felt i had already maxed out my potential and terminated me on the spot, without continuing my probationary period.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to understand that the value of an employee in customer service, goes beyond speed.
