  1. A great company on the rise

I have been working at Freescale Semiconductor

    Pros

The company has a great culture and offers many perks - free onsite gym with exercise classes, 5% 401k match, good health plan, and generous paid time off.

    Cons

Uncertain future for employees given recent merger announcement. Entire employee base other than directors and above moved into gray cubicles in last two years.

    Pros

I could talk with anyone and everyone. Overall, an extremely friendly environment, and I recommend it for anyone wanting to try getting experience in the Semiconductor, Microcontroller, or Sensor industry.

    Cons

I have nothing. Maybe the food was a little TOO good, or the people TOO friendly. Seriously...I have nothing bad to say about Freescale Semiconductor.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. I had heard about the recent sale to NXP, and that will be interesting, but as far as I can tell there shouldn't be any major change in work culture (I hope). Keep on getting involved with the community, providing fun activities and benefits for your employees, and actively looking for new applications for your products.

    Pros

The company offers great benefits. The best is the accumulation of vacation hours based on the length of service, up to 5 weeks.

    Cons

Not many training opportunities are available. Travel is extremely restricted. Lots of work, fewer people available to do the work.

    Pros

The work culture is very encompassing and welcoming.
The senior members are more than happy to share their knowledge to the interns and new grads.
Training is impeccable and all resources needed are provided promptly.
And the HR team goes out of its way to make the interns feel welcomed.

    Cons

    None from an interns perspective.
The compensation however varies by a big factor for grad and under grad students.

    Pros

I loved how I was brought on as an Engineering Intern and given a real task to complete. I was initially hired on for one role, and then was transferred to another position that was a better fit for me. The CEO (Gregg Lowe) is improving the company tremendously as well.

    Cons

Everyone is given a very specific role because it is such a large company, so often times you may have to try multiple people to find the best answer to your problem (which is good too because there are many people to ask).

    Advice to Management

I loved everything about my experience. Definitely appreciated the emphasis that school comes first while doing my summer/fall co-op and taking a full load of courses.

    Pros

People, compensation, benefits, flexibility, location, travel opportunities, mobile device management, more features accessible via cloud, innovation, HR, 401K

    Cons

Politics, semiconductor business cycles, consistency between business units, already reorganizing, relative performance, competition, preferential to corporate headquarters, prefers younger employees, growing cost reduction pressure
