    Pros

    You can get a Mtn bike after 60 yrs of service!

    Cons

    Was part of a small company that was bought by GE. After purchase GE slammed us with their "culture". Pay stagnated, no more company events, and lay offs. Company created fear by randomly letting folks go with no notice. Their rules prevented us from doing business and cost revenue. Lastly, GE sent in their managers which had no idea what we did and created absurd goals that no one could meet. Terrible company...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Figure out what a company does BEFORE buying it. Don't mess with a successful business model. Stop using fear to get demands. We are people not peons...

    Pros

    Many wonderful people who are a joy to work with. Exciting projects always in the pipeline. Accepting of diversity.

    Cons

    Too many Rube Goldberg processes pretending to be six sigma. Strong belief in PIE (Performance, Image, Exposure) with performance only 10% of the equation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Emphasize and reward lean processes. Emphasize performance more over image and exposure. Learn from acquired companies processes, some of which are much better than those at GE.

    Pros

    Salaries (for some) are exceptional

    Cons

    If you ever fall out of favor with the business leadership, your career is trashed. You will be dismissed, laid off, or simply walked to the door with no explanation. They take the term 'At Will' to heart. Management only cares about money, ego, pride, their career - and then the business.

    Pros

    Big company, opportunities to move around. A lot of good people to work with who try their very best. GE Management appear genuine in building business. Good opportunities in some areas of the Aviation business associated with new technology. Some good benefits. Appears loyal to experienced engineers and tries to cater for training new graduates.

    Cons

    Company still stuck in box level design mind set. Too many micro-managing former Smiths Managers who react to hallway tittle tattle and gossip. Old boys network protects bad managers particularly in one area of Chief Engineers Office. Work life balance not as good as Honeywell and Rockwell.

    Get rid of poor department heads.

    Pros

    Time off when you can get them and holidays off. Work at least 40 hrs. a week. Good co-workers to work with. manufacturing plant in all air conditioned.

    Cons

    Leadership is bad in every department. Benefits are alright compare to the valley, but most big companies can beat them. Management provide goals just to change them while performing annual reviews.
    People are promoted base on who they know and not what they know. To get hire there or promoted, all people have to do is become friends with the member of management. Helps if you are related to someone in management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Need to start hiring people for management from the outside and learning new ideas. Hiring co-ops to permanent position is not a advancing since they are learning the same old ways of doing things.

    Flexible Schedule, Good Pay, Lots of OT

    Cons

    The mangers do not supervise their employees, and they are very non-productive. Very poor business plans.

    Pros

    Work-life balance is great, at least in my department.

    Cons

    Health insurance is almost nonexistent. Deductibles are so high that I can't afford to take my children to the doctor when they need it. We used to have high-walled cubicles, which was bad enough. The company has recently moved us into tiny chest-high cubicles, which we all hate. The work area is freezing, and the layout reminds me of photos of the sweatshops of the early 1900s. I have to believe it makes it hard to recruit new employees when the candidates see these conditions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Offer health insurance of a quality commensurate with the size of GE; this isn't a mom-and-pop operation. Devise a salary structure that at least keeps pace with inflation.

    Pros

    -stable 40hr work week
    -overtime available

    Cons

    -favoritism and "compadrismo" is out of control
    -everyone trying to get each other fired, funny with new "teaming" concept things have gotten worse
    -management takes every opportunity to screw over employees even though they have no idea what they are doing.
    -it's about who you know
    -company policies selectively enforced
    -throwing money away on cafeteria staff and hiring "leaders" that couldn't lead a bathroom cleaning.
    -qualified employees get passed over for internal jobs routinely

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Quit trying to screw over employees. You guys are the problem not the hard workers making everyone up top richer. Lol, pretty lame attempt at giving yourselves a good review. "Keep up the good work" on this site. We all know the truth.

    Pros

    The UDC (University Development Center) is close enough to campus to walk to, which is a plus. The people that work at the UDC in Houghton are great. They are more than willing to help you with any issues you run into, and are overall good to work with.

    Cons

    - The team leads that you work with in Grand Rapids (GE Aviation's main office) are overall jerks. They seem annoyed when you call them to ask for help or clarification about a task they assigned you. One of the team leads ridiculed me one day because my car was stuck in my driveway due to excessive snowfall.
    - I got stuck doing simple bug fixes and going through test requirements, rather than doing any actual coding.
    - Time given to complete tasks was way underestimated, and whenever I asked for another hour or two to finish a task the team lead would get angry.
    - The pay is pretty low for an internship in this field. Only $15/hr.
    - The company doesn't really take the UDC seriously. They've already cut back to the point that there is only one team at the UDC, as opposed to several. It won't be long before it shuts down completely.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Think about who you make team leads. People are more apt to enjoy their job if their team lead is a decent person.
    - Increase pay to your interns. Your pay is not competitive at all. It is really easy to find another job in the field with higher pay.
