    Bad management

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsTime off when you can get them and holidays off. Work at least 40 hrs. a week. Good co-workers to work with. manufacturing plant in all air conditioned.

ConsLeadership is bad in every department. Benefits are alright compare to the valley, but most big companies can beat them. Management provide goals just to change them while performing annual reviews.
People are promoted base on who they know and not what they know. To get hire there or promoted, all people have to do is become friends with the member of management. Helps if you are related to someone in management.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to start hiring people for management from the outside and learning new ideas. Hiring co-ops to permanent position is not a advancing since they are learning the same old ways of doing things.

    Poor Management

    CMO (Former Employee)
    Dayton, OH

ProsFlexible Schedule, Good Pay, Lots of OT

ConsThe mangers do not supervise their employees, and they are very non-productive. Very poor business plans.

Imagination at Work? I'd like to imagine decent benefits and cost-of-living adjustments.

    Engineering Project Manager (Current Employee)
    Grand Rapids, MI

ProsWork-life balance is great, at least in my department.

ConsHealth insurance is almost nonexistent. Deductibles are so high that I can't afford to take my children to the doctor when they need it. We used to have high-walled cubicles, which was bad enough. The company has recently moved us into tiny chest-high cubicles, which we all hate. The work area is freezing, and the layout reminds me of photos of the sweatshops of the early 1900s. I have to believe it makes it hard to recruit new employees when the candidates see these conditions.

Advice to Senior ManagementOffer health insurance of a quality commensurate with the size of GE; this isn't a mom-and-pop operation. Devise a salary structure that at least keeps pace with inflation.

    GE Aviation Mcallen =hell hole

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    McAllen, TX

    Pros-stable 40hr work week
    -overtime available

Cons-favoritism and "compadrismo" is out of control
-everyone trying to get each other fired, funny with new "teaming" concept things have gotten worse
-management takes every opportunity to screw over employees even though they have no idea what they are doing.
    -it's about who you know
    -company policies selectively enforced
-throwing money away on cafeteria staff and hiring "leaders" that couldn't lead a bathroom cleaning.
-qualified employees get passed over for internal jobs routinely

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit trying to screw over employees. You guys are the problem not the hard workers making everyone up top richer. Lol, pretty lame attempt at giving yourselves a good review. "Keep up the good work" on this site. We all know the truth.

    Worst Internship Experience Yet

    Simulation Systems Intern (Former Employee)
    Houghton, MI

ProsThe UDC (University Development Center) is close enough to campus to walk to, which is a plus. The people that work at the UDC in Houghton are great. They are more than willing to help you with any issues you run into, and are overall good to work with.

Cons- The team leads that you work with in Grand Rapids (GE Aviation's main office) are overall jerks. They seem annoyed when you call them to ask for help or clarification about a task they assigned you. One of the team leads ridiculed me one day because my car was stuck in my driveway due to excessive snowfall.
    - I got stuck doing simple bug fixes and going through test requirements, rather than doing any actual coding.
    - Time given to complete tasks was way underestimated, and whenever I asked for another hour or two to finish a task the team lead would get angry.
    - The pay is pretty low for an internship in this field. Only $15/hr.
    - The company doesn't really take the UDC seriously. They've already cut back to the point that there is only one team at the UDC, as opposed to several. It won't be long before it shuts down completely.

Advice to Senior Management- Think about who you make team leads. People are more apt to enjoy their job if their team lead is a decent person.
    - Increase pay to your interns. Your pay is not competitive at all. It is really easy to find another job in the field with higher pay.

    SUCKS OUT LOUD!

    Financial Analyst (Former Employee)
    Dayton, OH

ProsThere are many well-meaning and hardworking people at the company. The problem is that these people are not in positions where they can change processes or improve policies.

ConsI was privvy to some very shady dealings in Finance. The company needs to do a better job of auditing for creative bookeeping. The site where I worked routinely 'cooked the books' and if you spoke out against it then you were suddenly gone. I was too afraid to file a formal concern with the U.S. Dept. of Defense. I merely decided to get a job elsewhere....

Advice to Senior ManagementGet a grip on the reality and develop integrity! The problem is that top management needs to drill down where the numbers don't make sense instead of relying on the site management to provide honest answers. It will make the company more profitable in the end!

    Not Recommended for a Career

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Grand Rapids, MI

ProsLarge company with diverse career opportunities if willing to relocate.
    Wide range of training programs.

ConsComplex and bureaucratic organization that struggles to keep customers satisfied.
Cumbersome processes and the lack of basic tools make even the most simple tasks burdensome.
    Extremely internally focused.
Management views the only place that talent exists is external to the company - maybe good if you're a new hire. However, the majority of the new hires lack industry and domain expertise and experience.
    Aoorly run and disfunctional company.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on the customer in your actions, not just in your words. Take care of your employees that are not Exec Band. Get out of your offices and communicate.

    overworked and under paid!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

Pros- Big name with alot of power behind it
    - Great benefits

Cons- overtime only if you are willing to show that you can overwork yourself to the tenth power!
    - This particular GE company or Unison doesn't pay well at all, unless you are in management
    - Diversity in this place means, having a majority of a particular minority group
    - a micromanaged environment
    - no teamwork within employees, everyone snakes each other the first chance they get, behind each other's backs
    - overtime is allowed only if management thinks that something really needs to be completed, not considering that employees don't want to work overtime if the amount is only going to give back their taxes taken on a 40hr work week

Not a very good place to work!

    Sales (Current Employee)
    Grand Rapids, MI

Pros-Excellent professional training programs are available.
-Large company with numerous opportunities worldwide for broadening your career.

Cons-Large, bureaucratic company with cumbersome internal processes. Very internally focused.
-Lack of customer focus and lack of product/industry/customer knowledge and depth across leadership levels.
-Very poor internal communication, lack of strategic direction, and managements inability to motivate the workforce make GE a tough place to enjoy and have a career.
-Managements lack meaningful focus on employees is manifested in high burn out and turn over rates.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on your employees. Once you have one, clearly and consistently communicate your strategic directorion to your workforce. Put strong, competent leaders (not just managers) in place and have people skills and have subject matter expertise in the areas they lead. GE has a great legacy and history to leverage - use it to your advantage.

    Not Jack Welch's GE

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Cincinnati, OH

    ProsCompensation
    Most co-workers are pretty smart

    ConsNot a meritocracy
Incompetent people get promoted, good people stay on the bottom
Most other companies haven't cut back on benefits as severely
HR runs the company and makes decisions on things they have no knowledge about

Advice to Senior ManagementGo back to the meritocracy it used to be.
