Questionable Management Practices in San Ramon

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at GE

Pros- Easy commute for ppl who live in San Ramon. For others there are better companies on the other side

Cons- Some very questionable ppl have been given Senior positions in this office who have no clue what they are doing
- Questionable hiring practices
- Current Management lack proper training, communication skills and don't know how to talk to their employees
- If you want to get hired, you need to know someone or be related to someone. Very shady.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior GE management should look into hiring and HR issues within this location before they blow up.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Internship

Intern (Former Employee)
Louisville, KY

I worked at GE as an intern for less than a year

ProsGood pay, lots of opportunities to network. It looks very good on your resume to have an internship with General Electric appliances, where I worked.

ConsBad location (Kentucky), I was not busy enough and spent a lot of my time surfing the web and going on CNN and Facebook. Other employees didnt care that I wasn't busy.

Design Engineer

Design Engineer (Former Employee)

I worked at GE full-time for less than a year

ProsBig company; the new hire programs are good, most companies copied GE.

ConsToo big, too much red tape, difficult to get anything done, you'll be relegated to a cubicle and most of the people there typically just suck

Solid Company but inconsistent management at local levels

Account Manager (Former Employee)
Columbus, OH

I worked at GE full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat Brand recognition within many industries
Potential for the individual divisions to work together to close large opportunities.
Rich company history
Excellent product training when it is available

ConsToo quick to cut expenses when quarterly numbers fall short of expectations
Good ole boy mentality within management
Reluctance by local management to push back on HQ when necessary
Little focus on sales results too much administrative work to be an effective account manager
Reviews written based on manager perceptions that are not supported by the results of individuals (IE you make your number but get dinged because you are not the managers favorite)

Advice to Senior ManagementHold your middle managers accountable for district / regional goals and don't let them point fingers at account managers especially ones who made their numbers and grew their territory.

GE Houston Horrible took a 10K pay cut just to get away

Senior Field ServiceTechnician (Former Employee)
Houston, TX

I worked at GE full-time for more than 10 years

Proscompetitive pay is about the only positive thing i can say about this company but with the benefits getting as bad as they were i'm not even sure if the pay makes up for it.

ConsHorrible management, GE bought our offshore service company and brought in their own management. They had no idea about our industry and no idea about our product. They didn't follow our policies or their own, if you had an issue and it actually fell under a policy they would just change the policy or ignore it all together. They skimped on everything from tools, supplies, software, you name it, it wasn't uncommon to bring something from home just to be able to complete a job. There was also a horrible attitude when it came to the customers so long as the customer didn't know it was wrong then it was okay. This attitude was directly from our upper management and just had a trickle down effect. It was definitely a blame game with very little accountability.

Advice to Senior ManagementReevaluate, put a little more value in actual experience, we had guys with 10+ years of experience leaving left and right because of our management or lack of.

Chaotic and Dysfunctional

Experienced Senior Professional (Current Employee)
Atlanta, GA

I have been working at GE full-time for more than 5 years

ProsMany smart people work here and are generally pleasant colleagues. If you are right out of school and can get into one of the management programs, it is a good place to start. If you are an experienced professional and need a job, then maybe this is a place to wait until the economy improves.

ConsGE is an extraordinarily bureaucratic company, despite the internal company line. It continually reorganizes (every year I've been here) so there really is never a steady-state. The company is investing in systems, but currently the info systems are absolutely dismal. It also off-shores a lot of employment to contractors in India, and many of these people have poor English language skills, and you will have to work with them.

Working at GE Energy

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Atlanta, GA

I worked at GE full-time for more than 3 years

Pros-Some smart people in the company
- Get to network a lot
- Big company logo on your resume

Cons- Bad pay - no significant increments / promotions no matter what you do
- Some people lack quality educational degrees and have been hired in the company which mess up the entire management/leadership chain
- Cannot grow in the company upwards - too political & bureaucratic / behind the scenes actions
- No work/ life balance - they don't reward you as per the work you do - you slog and no rewards
- Who gets promoted and what they did you will never be told and kept in the dark - too much hidden stuff
- For young people this is not the place - i would rather suggest working in a smaller firm where you get noticed and recognized and rewarded early in your career
- A 100 +year establishment shop like this should have well defined processes for everything but that's not the case

- This is what i have seen when i worked there for 3+ years .....the company as a whole organization needs some work.

Advice to Senior Management- watch what you hire - hire people with quality educational degrees and skills sets. Some of the management i worked with has no leader ship skillets / good school degrees
- Stop hiding stuff from employees and stop the political game in the company

Cost out targets driving the wrong people away

General Manager (Current Employee)
Fairfield, CT

I have been working at GE full-time for more than 10 years

Pros- Good people, smart... driven
 - Great opportunitites if you are willing to relocate every two years
 - Great place to be from

Cons- Great people leaving ...many, many great people leaving
 - There is an internal battle between regional teams and P&Ls in the Energy business, a complete distraction to the entire company
 - GE promised to stick with senior managers that have industry and domain experience, but most of the CEO placements recently are a move to place the GE favorites with respect to industry knowledge

Advice to Senior Management- Get in touch with your employees and listen before they are all gone and you need to start over

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
