I have been working at GE Healthcare

    Pros

Job security is high. No age discrimination - both older and younger employees. Above average autonomy - no micro management. The tools and equipment needed to do the job at the office or at home are superior. Some flexibility on hours. Can work from home 2 days a week. Generally good level of professionalism from the average co-worker - no slackers.

    Cons

Growth and promotion opportunities very limited many co-workers have been in the same job 5+ years. Very little training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seek ways to cross-train to encourage better product development and increase the quality of the products and the customer support.. Create in-house pre-release product introductions with hands on training so that we can learn about new products before the customer calls.

I have been working at GE Healthcare as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

You will have plenty of responsibilities and opportunities at the same time. The benefits, including company car, health insurance, phone, iPad, fastrak for Bay Area and computer are very nice. Philosophy of management is one of understanding and compassion, especially under moments of heavy stress. As it relates to Field Engineering, entrepreneurship encompasses a large percentage of the actual job, but this can be a negative for some employees.

    Cons

Due to size of the company, you will feel like a number in some aspects. To advance, you will have to not only excel, but you will need to be creative. Lack of a plan for interns, with a new position at a company of this size, a structured environment would only help.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employee morale is critical to the success of the company. Try and keep morale as high as possible, and stop letting local companies out-bid you as it relates to the employee benefit package.

I worked at GE Healthcare full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I liked the freedom in scheduling my own workload and the interaction with the customers. My Director was fair and a very smart man but ignored my plea's to participate in GE's Lean Six Sigma program.

    Cons

Forced revenue generation - Quarterly goals to sell consumables to hospitals that already have group buys (HCA) and refuse to buy directly from vendors. Results in poor performance evaluations when the goals are not met. Also leads Service Engineers to "con" hospitals into purchases not needed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ditch the forced billed services quota.

I have been working at GE Healthcare as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

The opportunities exist for anyone to make their time here a career or just a stop for the next great thing. Surprisingly a lot of chances to try new things and expand your skills.

    Cons

The size comes with a price. Changes to systems and reporting can be a challenge to getting things done. Nothing surprising, but does impede progress within smaller business areas.

I have been working at GE Healthcare

    Pros

Plenty of opportunity to move around the organization.
    Great leadership training in Crotonville.
Work can be challenging as the problems are complex.
For a large organization it is generally very well run and is working to be more agile/lean.

    Cons

HR and Finance have too much influence in the organization.
As a larger organization it can be frustrating get things done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less reliance on contractors, you don't get what you pay for. It cost more than is capture on the P&L statement.

    I worked at GE Healthcare

    Pros

Many many resources at your disposal. If you work hard you will go far with the company. Benefits are great compared to other companies in the industry. Many discount perks such as electronics, software, wireless service, etc.

    Cons

Organization structure very dynamic and in constant flux. Less support from senior management. Too many on-line training requirements. Employee encouraged but at times expected to engage in extracurricular activities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider a smother/longer on-boarding or transitioning process for a new employee, because there are too many processes and too much to absorb in a given time.

I have been working at GE Healthcare full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    - You get to work on products that quite literally save lives every day
    - Good leadership development programs and some of the brightest people in the world as your coworkers

    Cons

    - Lots of red tape and bureaucracy. Senior leadership and front line managers and staff get it and are trying to improve but the middle layers of management are holding back from change
    - Short term focus (quarterly results) tends to sacrifice long term investments in growth

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work hard to assess what kinds of leaders we have in middle management. Even one bad senior leader can demotivate entire segments of the organization
