I have been working at GE full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Ok Salary
Opportunity to move around within company

    Cons

Cancelled pension as many companies have done.
Moving jobs overseas to Mexico and India and laying off longtime employees
New PLM software for managing engineering drawings and Bill of Materials is a flop. It takes an incredible amount of effort to get anything new in system and through lengthy approval process. Upper management would be seen as failing if they pulled the plug on PLM after investing so much time and money so they keep putting lip stick on a pig.
Many people like "Edison's" start at GE and are promoted through the ranks, they have no real world experience and only know the GE way which often lacks common sense and can be frustrating to forward thinkers.
Managers are afraid of their boss so no one is willing to rock the boat to make the company better.

Guess how many Electrical Engineers are at General Electric ... Not many! And most of them are not US citizens.

    Stay away from GE Engineering!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get an outside consulting company to come in and evaluate what works and what doesn't. Then listen to what they say. If you continue to keep your head in the sand then you will get more of the same and the company will head further down the drain until it is too late to right the ship.

I worked at GE as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

Large Company, Job Stability, Good Benefits, Opportunity to Travel

    Cons

Large Company Bureaucracy, Slow to make changes

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please be prepared for your interns. I have had 3 internships with GE. Two were quite dissapointing as the managers did not have any work for me and I had to constantly look for work from other employees and teams. My last internship was reasonable but still led me to decline the full time offer after graduating college.

I have been working at GE full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Only good thing which I can think of is employees are pushed very hard so they learn a whole lot more

    Cons

Not a great company to work. Tons and tons and tons of bureaucracy. Literally we had meetings for meetings for meeting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have given the management several inputs earlier and it all went to garbage. So I dont think its necessary

I have been working at GE full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The pro's of working at GE are getting GE on your resume because it has such wide recognition. The salary is just ok and raises are low but it's comparable to most companies.

    Cons

GE tries so hard to be more efficient they don't stop to ensure if the projects they are doing make sense. Leadership and employee work ethic varies greatly in that some people are loaded up with work while others are not. Leadership is self serve and middle management is the dumping ground for all things from the bottom up and the top down. If you are a worker you will have zero life balance and you'll get maybe a .5 or 1% more raise than your co worker who did the bare minimum.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

GE is a self serve culture and does not foster collaboration among peers. HR does not engage with staff and there is no talent management. The employees that stay there are the long term ones that got a pension and are no longer productive contributors. There is nothing to keep the bright, hardworking and high potential employee there so after 3 years more of that talent leaves.

I was a CNC lathe operator 3rd shift. I did benching and ran the tumble area

I worked at GE as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

I liked the opportunity to feel like I was helping my country with the machine parts that we made for the military. Also for the financial stability that is offered there

    Cons

I worked for a temp agency and I feel that someone had it out for me, I was a hard worker and they listen to rumors instead of looking at job performance and how I worked on the job. I got along with everyone I worked with and did above what was expected with overtime when I worked second shift.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I feel that if you don't have pull you don't get into GE, which is not fair. I feel that people put there personal instead of who can get the job done and who would make a great asset to the team. I had excellent reviews from my supervisors but both times I could not get hired. I heard if someone on your assessment team as it in for you, you don't get hired.

    Pros

Excellent pay thanks to Union Contract NOT because of management!

    Cons

Management has a narrow focus and point of view. the company is NOT open to working with employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop threatening employees with loss of employment because of productivity results created out of conditions that employees have NO CONTROL OVER!!

I worked at GE full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Alot of opportunities to go up the corporate ladder. I had some great bosses. If you had the right bosses, your jobs were great.

    Cons

With the opportunities to go up the corporate ladder, But there is alot of nepotism. Not necessarily family but buddies.
It really depends on your boss. I had many over the years, and some really help guide their employees, and others were just incompetent.
