I have been working at GE full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company is very good at allowing work-life balance, and offers great training courses. The pay is equivalent to the averages.

    Cons

Very complex company politics that usually hinder performance. The company politics usually cause information to be slowed and sometimes not transferred as it should be. This can be very stressful for everyone with tight deadlines that have metrics tied to your performance. This is a large company so that disconnect can be expected, but it seems to be so large that it may never be corrected.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean out the systems to have one uniform communication. Allow the employees/managers to set the metrics that best show their performance. Have dedicated facilities for high priority tasks that only the EB has access to. Realize that the cookie cutter roll-outs which the employees, IT, and interfacing parties are going to follow is not always better than what was done before.

    Pros

A lot of the people are really good, really helpful, and know their jobs well.

    Cons

Though GE talks a lot about its HR processes (EMS, training), some managers ignore completely it for years, and HR does nothing. Until one days 5 years have passed, and you learn your career has been stymied by a dysfunctional manager talking behind your back.

I worked at GE full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

GE as a company is good. They hired the worst possible Sybase rejects to lead the platform. If GE hires people with people skills this could be a good place to work.

    Cons

People in manager positions have no clue what a platform is.
    Serious lack of people skills.
There is widespread behavior bordering ethical misconduct.
You will be *told* to work on weekends and not paid for it. If you don't there will repercussions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go beyond fancy numbers in ppt. Management is about people and not about a cherry picked numbers on a ppt slide.
    Address serious lack of integrity.
Software is about human capital. Focus on employees who get the work done.

I worked at GE full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of development opportunities, great stuff (on paper), and with the right leadership; you could do well. Leadership off-site and the vision they espouse is outstanding. Not sure how there is a disconnect between corporate and the local plant in terms of leadership values and ideals.

    Cons

This location's leadership is more about backstabbing and micromanagement. Everyone acted like you were trying to take their job or trying to do their job. They don't believe in getting both sides of the story, just whom they want to believe and push an agenda that they previously set. Steal ideas as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to both sides of the story and follow the facts. Leadership lacks credibility when facts are ignored. Additionally, a good idea is just that, should not feel threatened by good ideas. A place hostile to initiative is doomed to never reach the heights they could.

I have been working at GE

    Pros

GE has a strong brand and overall a solid reputation. It's a good experience to work for GE.

    Cons

They don't have a strong training program. They have a complicated compensation plan for the sales team and they are likely to change the compensation plan at any given time. Its such a large company (over 300,000 employees) and each division/business unit has the authority to run their own business which makes it difficult to work with other businesses that have their own goals and agenda.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time with the customers and the employees who work with the customers on a daily business in order to have a better understanding of customer needs and to learn about how GE can provide more value to its customer base. Also, changing your sales team's compensation plan in the middle of the year is a terrible thing to do and its a bad way to retain your employees.

I have been working at GE full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Nothing, the company is so big and bureaucratic that you're just a number. They talk about simplifying work but all they do is pass it along to others

    Cons

Too many to list. My suggestion is not apply to this company. They don't care about you they just care about the bottom line after the senior executive team writes a check with their mouth to the board that their ass can't cash

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit lying about stuff. All of you talk about simplifying and work life balance but the first time that someone speaks out your mid range managers take retaliation on them. You all should be ashamed of yourself

I have been working at GE full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good people, lots of work to keep you busy, and lots of on-the-fly learning opportunity.

    Cons

Old equipment, small budget, poor advancement opportunity, poor training opportunity. Mfg-Eng-Mgr has gorilla grip on job and will throw company and employees under the bus to protect his position. Yearly Goals and Objectives review program can be manipulated by management at will.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rotate engineering managers every 7 years, or so. Invest in newer tools and equipment. Invest in training employees. Fix the review program to prevent manipulation by managers. Stop raping company's, transferring lines offshore, and then selling the company's off for profit: your killing america! At least pay some effective taxes.
