I have been working at GFI Group full-time

    Pros

There's a lot of great things about working under GFI. Particular, I love my coworkers, the benefits (health, dental, life, commuter discount, company teams, pizza parties) and the area that I work it. I also like that the upper management tries to keep you in the loop of what's going on in the company.

    Cons

Like mentioned in other reviews, salary isn't that great, and upper management seems more concerned about miniscule things, such as making sure you stay the full 8.5 hours a day. I want to say a good portion of my meetings involved matching our timesheets to GFI's timesheet, but nothing was really said or done to fix it.

    I worked at GFI Group

    Pros

The flexibility in the area I worked to take care of personal things and, for instance, leave work early was great. The camaraderie between all the workers in my group was great also. The work environment was always professional but never stuffy or too strict. My managers were a pleasure to work for.

    Cons

There was not much work to occupy my time, and the possibilities for advancement or leadership development were very slim. If you're a hard charger looking to really move up, then this might not be the company. However, GFI is a Wall Street company and did experience layoffs during the recent downtown. That certainly contributed to a lack of growth opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More regular work feedback would be useful as well as perhaps a career roadmap of sorts. If the position doesn't provide much room for growth, it is important to communicate that to the interviewee.

I have been working at GFI Group

    Pros

Nice view. Nice building. Nice location. Nice perks with business expenses, dinners, events, etc. Stone street isn't far. Nice people.

    Cons

Pay is not on oar with the rest of the industry. Certain managers can be abbrasive and not helpful as they should be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Raise brokerage fees to meet the industry standard. More lenient expenses policy would be nice. Managers should empathasize more with brokers

I have been working at GFI Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good work life balance and an entrepreneurial spirit when the business was moving the right way. Atmosphere like a family, so great as long as the relationship is sunny.

    Cons

Markets and trading environment moving against firm. Morale has declined given lay offs and challenges to core business. Power too concentrated in relatively few hands. Management would benefit from a wider range of opinion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to embrace technology and a more sophisticated product range, which can't be so easily replicated by technology. Firm already doing some of the right things but need to do more.

    Pros

Nice group of people to work with

    Cons

Management is "small time". No one from a big Wall Street firm to lend perspective.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire someone in Head Office who has worked for a big firm.
