I have been working at GTM Sportswear as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Everyone I worked with was willing to help.
The learning experience was rather painless.
Learned a lot about the industry and business.

    Cons

Bad bad internship program. The program is way behind compared to what other corporations are doing right now. It's also hard to start as an intern and have that turn in to full-time employment. Internship wasn't organized very well and a lot of what I worked on was just stuff that nobody else wanted to work on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change your interview formats to more behavioral based and interview more than one time. You would be able to filter out bad employees that way. Establish some sort of summer internship program where the interns can be innovative and help solve company problems; also, get the interns involved with each other with some out of office networking opportunities.

I have been working at GTM Sportswear as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I enjoyed the people I worked with. Everyone is friendly and easy to communicate with. No dress code.

    Cons

No real experience. As an accounting intern I deal with NOTHING accounting related. My role was very monotonous and boring. My role was more customer service than anything. Plus, I was paid less than the full-time staff, even though they only had a high school degree.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow the accounting interns to get actual accounting work.

It isn't for everyone, but 25 years and almost 1000 employees doesn't happen by accident.

I have been working at GTM Sportswear full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Fast paced and fun environment for people that are fast paced and fun. Free medical clinic for employees, and spouses and children. Employee scholarship program. Awesome medical coverage, 401k matching, paid vacation. Employee emergency assistance fund. I work with great friends.

    Cons

Management had growing pains, made some wrong moves with good intentions regarding personnel and inventory that were magnified by the recession and changes in the market. Entry level positions have entry level pay, but some people don't include the cost of their benefits. High turnover rate of external executives and sales reps has been an issue.

I have been working at GTM Sportswear full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They have great products and stand behind them. They offer some benefits for employees but it could greatly improve. They try to create great relationships with the customers and try to do everything for them.

    Cons

They hire alot of young college kids from KS. They have a lot of issues with orders, they need to paid people more. They do not treat employees well. Most do not get raises even if they make their goals. They do not keep stock of popular items and run out of items all the time. New policy - if you leave they take half your vacation pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need to treat employees better, if they have an issue with an employee they need to give them time to improve. They need to get more stock of things and control that better. They need to pay employees more so they will stay and when they do leave -give them all of their vacation time. Also the company doesn't realize that most employees making their goals were working overtime and are salaried employees. They have lots of dedicated employees that they do not give alot of benefits to.

I have been working at GTM Sportswear full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great Discounts, free gym memberships, good mix of benefits, friendly and motivated employees. For the area you will not find a better company to work for. They are one of the largest employers in this town.

    Cons

Senior Management turnover, they can't seem to keep quality folks for long. Facilities are a little dated as they just kind of built on over the years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Empower you employees and stop pretending your the smartest folks in the room. Treat us like the brains of the outfit and not just the hands and we will deliver.

I have been working at GTM Sportswear full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

There are a few discounts available on the merchandise produced by the company. They would regularly hold "pot luck" style dinners for the holidays. There are local perks in the surrounding areas for discounts at some restaurants and even a free gym membership for all employees. They offer health benefits for full-time employees as well as a retirement package.

    Cons

The company is progressive in the areas of employee perks and healthcare, but very regressive in the day to day treatment of production workers. The company is very evenly split between the professional jobs and the production jobs. Production work at GTM is nothing shy of a sweat shop. The biggest con I would say is the fact that your immediate shift leader will most likely be someone who is under-qualified to lead people and is simply in that position based on tenure and not ability. This makes for a depressing work environment where employees constantly feel inferior to leaders who talk down to employees and from my experience are VERY unprofessional.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on the work environment of your production workers. They are the ones on the grind allowing the business to have product moving out to fill orders. These workers are the backbone of your organization. There is too much emphasis on the net sales numbers at the end of each month. Focus more on the employee satisfaction and figure out why you have such a high turnover rate and worry less about the green in the bank account.

I have been working at GTM Sportswear full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

GTM has A LOT of potential. They have a good hold on their market and if they do things correctly, will continue to grow and be very successful. They are located in Manhattan, KS which is a great place to live.

    Cons

Management. GTM has a habit of hiring managers from within the company, sometimes employees that have worked at GTM for 5+ years or more and haven't had the opportunity to experience management at multiple companies. The result is micro-managing and poor management all around. The executive team has their hands in too many things, making decisions that the others in the company with specific experience should be making. In my time here I have seen a lot of employee turnover.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Empower your employees more often and consider the onions of ALL employees, including interns and entry level employees. You never know where your next big idea is going to come from.

    Pros

Overall, I think very highly of GTM. It's a pretty friendly environment. Easy place to work, nice people, the work is not difficult by any means.

    Cons

Not exactly a long term position. Great for college students. Moving up in the company isn't easy, especially when they have already determined your place in the company.
