    Pros

This is a great job for anyone who enjoys talking about video games all day with customers and coworkers. You will get the latest news on upcoming releases from managers as well.

    Cons

On the other hand, the prospect for growth and advancement was not encouraged at the location I worked. Moreover, GameStop's business model is great for the company, but not so much for the customers.

    Advice to Management

Encourage team members to work together, especially during business moments. Properly train employees on the policies and procedures, so they can effectively meet the need of the customers without jeopardizing their job.

    Pros

If you're a gamer, you pretty much get first pick of pre-orders, get an employee discount on used games and consoles, and it's a good starting retail job for teenagers looking to make extra money.

    Cons

GameStop has a bad habit of hiring more people than they have hours to spare, so even if you are listed as employed at GameStop, you may end up never getting called in to work at all. For older applicants, management positions will be the only thing that pays off, otherwise you're wasting your time.

    Pros

You can look at video games all day.

    Cons

Customer service is a trial, the company only really operates during the holiday season, otherwise it remains comatose.

    Pros

Fun environment, it's great to be able to sell video games and talk about things you are passionate about. The people you work with are great people.

    Cons

Hours allotted to stores has always been low. This makes doing your operational tasks impossible to do within the allotted hours, forcing the store manager to work far more than the mandatory hours. Store associates are underpaid compared to the rest of the industry.

    Advice to Management

It is insulting when we are told how profitable the company is but we are given the minimum amount of hours the are given to stores. Be more mindful of issues such as these when dealing with the blood of the company.

    Pros

Very laid back. Entertaining. Great co-workers. Great discount. Great employee perks. Work is not hard at all. Easy interview process. Very hands on with the customers. First to know about new games and systems. Game rental policy.

    Cons

Bad scheduling. Low-Pay. Very low overhead so not many hours. A Lot of tedious busy work when slow. Old computer systems. Company equipment (registers, card readers) would fail constantly. Black Friday always sucks.

    Advice to Management

    Better Marketing

    Pros

The hours and scheduling are very flexible. You will also meet a lot of cool people, at least if you are in to anything remotely related to video games. I was lucky enough to have wonderful people to work with, whom I still consider friends.

    Cons

The hours are horrible. If you are not at least an assistant manager, do not count on consistent hours. Corporate seems to cut hour allocation per store more and more each year, expecting miracles of assistant and store managers alike. The pay would be fine if the workload was not increased exponentially per promotion. That said, the store managers certainly do not make what they are worth. The rate of promotion is rather sporadic as well. Due to the influx of outside hiring of individuals from chains like Blockbuster and the already small employee force per store, it could take one between three months to two years before an opening for the simplest promotion is available.

    Advice to Management

Store managers should tread lightly on corporate's recommended amount of holiday hires. We simply hired three extra people this past holiday season and each person never received more than a twenty hour work week during the peak of the season. District managers simply need to be more realistic with store goals and expectations since so many cuts have been made.

    Pros

Mostly young staff, good discounts, sometimes fun customers, inside industry news and knowledge, fast-paced environment, relaxed dress code, flexible hours.

    Cons

Schedule based on performance, pressure from management to make hard sales, handling dirty used games and consoles, sales model based on pure profit from customers.

    Advice to Management

GameStop has virtually no competition, it makes all of it's money from used game sales. Quit pressuring customers for sales and provide a boutique-style experience in the store to make them comfortable and keep them coming back. Recognize when an employee works hard and not just employees who sell hard using dirty tactics used by management.

    Pros

Offer flexible schedule. Opportunities to advance. Good benefits. Employee discount plan is really good. Interesting product to sell. Good co-workers.

    Cons

Poor communication from management at times. Lack of recognition for a job well done often. Pay not on par with similar jobs at other companies

    Advice to Management

Remember to thank your employees when they are doing a good job. Increase pay levels for all employees. Loosen labor budget to lower stress levels of management team members.
