Former Employee – worked at Gander Mountain full-time for less than a year
Pros – Some of the pros are that the structure and system of the distribution centers is efficient, and there is plenty of opportunity for overtime. It was also nice to have 4 10-hour days M-Th, instead of 5 8-hour days. Another pro is that the schedule is set.
Cons – Constant heavy labor has a tendency to lead to illness. Also, like any other job, co-worker drama is still present (although much less than fast-food places and others where education is not necessary).
Advice to Senior Management – According to psychology, punishment (whether positive or negative) does nothing. If you want results from your employees, then only possible way is through positive (and negative, sometimes) reinforcement.

Former Employee – worked at Gander Mountain
Pros – Employee discount on products and beautiful office.
Cons – Used to be lots of very passionate people that lived the "Hunt, Fish,
Camp" lifestyle that were the buyers and senior managers but for last several years, most have quit or been fired because Sr. Mgmnt brought in people from other industries (Target, Macy's, Home Depot, etc) that really watered down and eliminated the people that built Gander....it is very sad.
Advice to Senior Management – Bring back the people that loved the industry...not a bunch of people who can just crunch numbers.

Former Employee – worked at Gander Mountain
Pros – Gander Mountain was a really fun place to work. The coworkers are a great team and offer unlimited support. Their entry-level pay was awesome, too.
Cons – Some of the management is on a bit of a power trip. I was in high school at the time and had to take off for my graduation - I was denied the day off. After talking to another manager, however, I did get the day off.
Advice to Senior Management – The Gander Mountain management team should take into consideration that many of their workers are only in high school and have to balance school, a personal life, and work. They should also watch how close they get to those who work under them.

Current Employee – been working at Gander Mountain
Pros – Very out going and responsive to any questions or concerns. Willing to train. Great working with the public. Able to get out to local businesses to present our products and services to them. This will increase our sales but more imporantly show our support to the local community. Working with associates to develop their presentation skills is a plus and a benefit.
Cons – None at this time. As with any retail position the flex of hours vs 9-5 is the only challange.
Advice to Senior Management – Keep working with your people. Develop action plans to have managers go to classes on how to present ideas to the customers and to break out of the quiet shells they work in.

Former Employee – worked at Gander Mountain
Pros – It's a hobby store, so most of the people you work with and customers are happy to be there, or at least have a passion for something in the store.
Cons – Retail level can be boring and mundane.
Advice to Senior Management – More positive encouragement when a job is done well.
