I have been working at Gannett

    Pros

There is a ton of opportunity to define the future of the company. Obviously Gannett is going through a major transition and there is a huge cultural shift taking place across the organization. If you prove your value, your voice will be heard, and I'm sure that sounds crazy for company veterans but it has been the case in my experience. Interesting business dynamics and strong focus on the financials and performance.

    Cons

Ready, fire, aim approach can be disconcerting. Strategically, Sr Leadership must plot out a roadmap and stick to it instead of reacting and chasing numbers. Need to revise the comp plan to incentivize the right behavior.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you would like the company to survive and evolve, you must bring in the right people and give them latitude to take risks and create new opportunities and revenue streams.

I worked at Gannett full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Friendly and encouraging work environment. There were flexible hours and a lot of time to get the work done. Paid time off and benefits were good.

    Cons

There was not much room to move up and the company was in a decline so there were not many opportunities to get a raise either. It seems that the newspaper industry is dying and the employees are suffering for it.

    Pros

Working for Gannett you feel as though you are "fighting the good fight." The HR staff and interview/recruitment process are wonderful. In addition, the staff is great and have a very helpful, team first attitude... across all divisions. Ever since Martore became CEO and leadership team was restructured, there has been a wonderful difference in company vision and morale.

    Cons

The salary is not great, dependent on position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep communication as open as possible so the big picture is always in view. This has become of greater focus recently, and it helps keep the "eye on the prize."

    Pros

Good People, no more "boys club" atmosphere, ability to move up. Great benefits, good management, zero tolerance for harassment, great HR.

    Cons

Is paper media dying? I think a lot of the worry in a job is how the future is going to shape it. When I worked there I constantly felt like there was an ambiance of "the sky is falling" over the lack of paper sales, and management could share ideas earlier to keep employees focused on work and less worried for job security.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Share the sentiment that newspapers still have a lot of life to give if that's what you feel. Tell it to the people you manage.

    Pros

Pay can be really good if your hitting goal. The company is growing and is dedicated to the future of the company.

    Cons

Limited holidays day..ie Christmas Eve, Day after Thanksgiving, etc. They don't have a great program for developing their employees who are interested in advancing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep investing in digital products and be fair when setting goals.

    Pros

The company provides a great atmosphere and quality of work/life balance. I enjoyed working with people within my group and even those outside. The company is good at providing yearly raise. Great benefits and flexible schedules.

    Cons

The pay could be better with such a large corporation and the hard work put in. Growth seems to be lacking. Some people within in the group put in more quality work than others which can be a struggle sometimes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I had a great manager during my time of employment.

I have been working at Gannett full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

It's a good working environment, there's some great benefits if you know where to look, and the pay while not stellar is about what you'd expect for entry level stuff (at least in my neck of the company). The company is CONSTANTLY buying out other media properties, so that is a good sign. They're also trying to get their many newpaper properties up to date (which if you've worked in newspaper, you know the one thing it hates is change) so kudos for that.

    Cons

We work very hard in my department. And we haven't received raises in two years. Other than that, the ladder may be a bit of a slow climb, career-wise, depending on where you are.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure you're keeping your ground floor employees in mind. Please continue to keep up with the times.

    I worked at Gannett

    Pros

This job is good for right out of college. It seems harder for more seasoned artists to conform to the system and procedures of the GIADC. Fun, casual environment. Fast paced.

    Cons

Hard to work your way up. Getting promoted gets you stuck on a worse shift. New hire shift is usually 4pm-12:30. The pay is very entry level.
