Garmin is a good place to work, despite uneven leadership among management.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Olathe, KS

I have been working at Garmin full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe best thing about Garmin is the generally friendly attitude among the employees. Managers and employees are eager to share knowledge across teams. It's not uncommon to have face-to-face discussions with the other people working on a project. There's a definite focus on problem-solving and creating better products. Company provided benefits are acceptable, and other amenities such as on-site gym are a plus.

ConsThe leadership among management seems hit or miss. Some are very interested in the well-being of their team, good at communication, or have a vision for products, while others are lacking. This has created confusion or frustration among employees about projects ("What are we doing? Why are we doing this?"). Sometimes management seems isolated, or lacks "big picture" thinking.

Advice to Senior ManagementOpen up to employees in general: become more inclusive, communicate strategies and goals, and ask for constructive feedback more often.

There seemed to be a great future ahead when I started but it turned into just a job.

Product Support Specialist (Current Employee)
Olathe, KS

I have been working at Garmin full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe benefits package is great; one of the best I've ever had.

Cons- The product support division carries a virtual life sentence. Very few people get to move out of the department or get meaningful promotions.
- Moral is almost nonexistent.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen! The employees convey the thoughts and opinions of the customers. When you ignore the employees, you are effectively ignoring the customers.

Great place to work, as long as it's not the call center taking calls.

Software Support Specialist (Former Employee)
Kansas City, MO

I worked at Garmin

ProsGreat benefits for employees and family. Cool community events for employees and family. Working with cutting edge technology. If you are an
Compensation
Innovation

ConsLost in the shuffle if you work in the call center. Your advice seems to go on deaf ears. When applying for internal position, you are denied with no help as to why and how to make yourself a better fit for the position. Human resource rules the company.

Has potential but doubt they will ever reach full possible capacity

Systems Engineer (Current Employee)
Olathe, KS

I have been working at Garmin

ProsThe company has done very well in a short amount of time which leaves it with an ample amount of cash in reserves. So it's not going anywhere for a while. Good company to work for if you're used to living in a very small fish bowl and have little to no clue what else is out there to be offered. People are great to work with.

ConsThe pay range for engineers is FAR below what the industry standard is. And they feed off new college graduates and people in dire situations that have little to no leverage to say anything about it. From what I've seen, they do not utilize people to the best of their abilities and it's difficult to get your voice heard when you have more experience dealing with specific situations.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet your mid level management to put some action behind their big mouth.

Used to be a fine place to work for

Senior Engineer (Former Employee)
Olathe, KS

I worked at Garmin

Pros* great benefit
* nice people
* easy-going style
* no dress code

Cons* little interaction among projects
* no specific project goals
* no clear career growth plan

Advice to Senior Management* listen to those who have a proven record and technical background/education instead of those who come up with empty talks
* try to understand why there are a record number of engineers leaving in 2011
* don't use less technical people evaluate the technical competency of more capable engineers. That will simply make 2012 another record-breaking year of people leaving the company
* use those talented people the right way, not just the company way. They have lots of other opportunities, too

Great electrical design engineering experience

Design Engineer (Current Employee)
Olathe, KS

I have been working at Garmin

ProsComprehensive design experience for entire product cycle
Analog, digital and RF design opportunities
Enabled to make critical project decisions
Work in multiple discipline teams (SW, ME, EE)
Hardware quality and performance is very important to Garmin management
People are very bright and fun to work with
Garmin is an engineering company from the top down
There are not very many design specialists at Garmin. Many of the engineers are jack of all trades. This gives design engineers the opportunity to work on many different problems, sometimes even at the same time.

ConsBest engineers are promoted to team leader and manager position.
No technical career path
HR is over-staffed and ineffective
Engineering salaries are not very competitive, working at Garmin is considered a benefit.
Executive management has trouble delegating
Executive management is very bad at training their upcoming managers. They just throw you in and say good luck.
Very little accountability when something goes wrong
Executive management has a long history of taking on too much and ignoring what is going on in the company. Nuvifone is a perfect example of how the executives were lured away from their primary responsibilities.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt would be good if the CEO and President would begin a comprehensive training program aimed at empowering their management staff. They do not seem to be concerned with who will replace them, just the day to day tasks. Both CEO and President micro manage nearly every task. Everyone on the executive management staff needs to learn to delegate and train their replacements. Second guessing everything your business segments do is wearing everyone out.

An average place to work, fair benefits, low wages, good for beginners

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Salem, OR

I have been working at Garmin

ProsA great place to work fresh out of school.
Easy and laid back for the most part.
Company expectation is generally 40 hours/week.
Some good people to work with.
Benefits are acceptable and have some nice features.
Great employee pricing on products.

ConsPay is very low and based on Kansas salaries.
Company thinks your biggest benefit is the right to work for them.
No promotion or advancement opportunities.
NO opportunity to get recognition or significant pay increase.
Standard 'merit' increases at review cycle are the same for everybody.
Company thinks they are innovating by integrating existing technology from other products.
Management promotion is based on the good ol' boy network.
Focuses hiring in cheaper new grads, not experienced employees.
Company has lack of trust of employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't be afraid to hire in external people, particularly into management. The company could really use some fresh thinking.
Implement position grades with salary windows.

Easy, steady, great work-life balance but no opportunity for growth or earnings

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Olathe, KS

I worked at Garmin

Pros1. Lifetime employment if you are an engineer
2. Nice benefits package compared to other hi-tech companies
3. Focus on work-life balance

Cons1. Opportunity to grow is absent if you are not an engineer
2. Accountability resides with C-Level mgt only. Senior/Middle-managers are "nice people" and "yes-men".
3. Auto business has no forward looking vision or growth plan

Advice to Senior Management1. Focus on people development. Implement leadership development program and provide opportunities for growth to ambitious people.
2. Give freedom to VPs and Directors to make decisions, spend money and manage budgets. Reward / hold them accountable for their actions.
3. Move away from "core business hours" concept. It is not in tune with the international culture of hi-tech. Immigrants and single people are willing to put in more hours and be super productive. Exploit that potential.
