I have been working at Garmin as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Garmin's work environment is second to none. Casual dress code and associates really love their jobs. The people are very friendly and easy to work with.

    Cons

Lack of structure and organization. Garmin seems to not know where they want to go with the company. They are always playing catch up. (Ex. GoPro vs Virb or FitBit vs VivoFit)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs to be more time training for the job. Being thrown into the fire can be a good experience but also very frustrating at times.

I have been working at Garmin full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    Competitive pay
    Easy to learn job
Overtime available but not usually required
    Strong product discounts
    Lots of company events

    Cons

Little/No growth opportunity or room to move up
Supervisors are not very useful and it usually requires a manager to get anything done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure your lower managers and supervisors are doing their jobs and playing essential roles in the company. Our supervisor is useless and we would be much more well suited with a competent department lead instead.

I worked at Garmin full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Engineering at Garmin is very hands on for every level of engineer. The working environment is tailored for product development. Engineers can make decisions that effect almost every aspect of the product.

    Cons

When competition comes, Garmin does not always put their best foot forward. Innovation is compromised for schedule and product cost. Many of the executives are engineers that seem to have forgotten what it is like as a design engineer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lead your teams in a way that gives them a vested interest in making amazing products. Remember that the "product is everything".

I have been working at Garmin full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Friendly, outgoing coworkers, for the most part.
Excellent health insurance, 401k, stock purchase plan, and other benefits.
Very health-conscious environment where activity is highly encouraged and supported.
Excellent amenities such as a cafeteria, a Starbucks, a parking garage, a workout room, and locker rooms.

    Cons

The company seems to be meeting-heavy, and decisions take longer than they should.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep taking the temperature of your employee attitudes on a regular basis and making adjustments as needed. I've seen positive changes in the past couple of years; keep it up!

I worked at Garmin as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Garmin has a very well thought out internship program. It is obvious that it is not the first time they have hired 170 college students for 10 weeks. Mentors are there for you when you need you but don't hover over your shoulder the entire day.

    Cons

I was only there a few months so it is hard to say.

    Pros

Great work life balance. Great benefits and time off policies

    Cons

Salary compensation could be better. Could be a little more transparent and a more open company.

I have been working at Garmin full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits, company culture, laid back but hard working culture, health initiatives

    Cons

Hard to move up. Several lateral moves available. Too many policy changes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Garmin is an innovative company but don't be too conservative as several products get to the market too late. Garmin needs to innovate early and be the first to market.

Current Employee - General Accountant in Olathe, KS

I have been working at Garmin full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Best benefits around. Employer paid health, dental, and vision insurance, 401k match and pension, and stock purchase plan.

    Cons

Low pay compared to every other company around. No room to advance. If you aren't an engineer you don't matter. A lot of micro-management at all levels of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust the mid-level managers so you don't have to micro-manage every aspect of the organization. Keeping non-engineers happy is important too.

I have been working at Garmin full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Relaxed atmosphere. Some of the greatest, friendliest and smartest people you'll find in the Midwest. Awesome benefits. Advancement opportunities for lower end employees.

    Cons

HR and red tape. We have lost too many talented people because of minimalist raises that left too many people on the lower end of the pay scale compared with other employers. A "decent" raise is 3.5% while the average inflation is 4%.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

From a business standpoint they've got a great grasp on where the company needs to go. From a personnel standpoint see my above comment. An employees pay trends downward compared with inflation and is really half what it should be to retain employees.
