    Pros

Great place if you want to do research and have an outside company/government agency to fund your research.

    Cons

For a not-for-profit company, employee objectives revolve around generating revenue.
Management at director level and above are completely disconnected from what it takes to get work done.
    Questionable ethics.
Little to no upward mobility for employees.
    Zero employee training.
    Poor communication to employees.

    Advice to Management

Read the employee survey and do something about the responses.

    Pros

Good work life balance. Flexible schedule. Ability to do natural gas research in chicagoland, not houston. On site cafe. Large offices. Close to highway and airport.

    Cons

Absolutely no technical training. GTI does not make or sell products, they do contract scientific research, testing or service. These contracts come from the government or private industry and they don't fall from the sky, YOU have to generate an original idea, and write a proposal and apply for them. The trouble is that senior management likes to blame the engineers and technicians when there are no projects to work on (measured by billability) But the senior managment isnt required to have billability, so they get no blame. They go to meetings and conferences all the time but dont come back with new funded projects. They dont allow the engineers and technicians to attend conferences, which are essential to generate new ideas and network with potential project collaborators.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your employees, let them go to conferences and meetings!!! If not, dont be surprised when they haven't learned anything in years and have no ideas for new proposals or people to collaborate with.

    Pros

Great Benefits-On site Cafe-Free-parking-Sam's Club next door-great life work balance

    Cons

Senior Leadership is disassociated with all mid-level and below initiatives-CEO acts like a "figurehead" never see him engaged in overall R&D functions-Small minded mentality prevails within the executive levels with regards to overall organizational effectiveness-5-S agenda set forth and no clear direction nor champion appointed to provide leadership and oversight of this initiative. Mid-level management disaffected from engaging oversight of R&D projects. R&D groups do not ever work together as a cohesive group resulting in mass inefficiencies and inherent redundant expenditures.

    Advice to Management

Until you get your internal procedures, agenda spelled out and initiated you will continue to waste tremendous amounts of time, money and employees trying to gain the operational efficiencies that you as leaders should be providing. The overall direction and reinforcing that direction on a continual basis. It is your responsibility, it comes with the territory of being in senior and mid-level leadership positions. If this is not implemented and practiced you will continue to struggle to reach the goals you set forth.

    Pros

A flexible work environment. Business hours are 6am to 6pm. You can wear just about anything you want along as it isn't offensive. Latest equipment and technology available. Fantastic benefits.

    Cons

No reward for hard work. Advancement is almost nonexistent. Senior employees not willing to train junior employees. Compensation is on the low end of the spectrum relative to other industries.

    Advice to Management

Reward those who make you look good. The paper pushers aren't the ones getting you data you so much rely on for more grant money.

    Pros

Low pressure, no dress code, like being at a junior college but having no classes to teach. Next SAMs Club so you get your shopping done at lunch.

    Cons

60% of the work force is overhead - Employee break down out of 200 total: (40) marketing, BD, training support, and PR; (10) Contract and Proposals: (12) accounting (4) legal; (8) IT; (6) facilities; (8) Admin; (5) lobbyist and regional BD; (10) program and project mgt; (4) purchasing ....

Lots of old timers just marking time. No engineering support of any kind.

70% of funding comes from Government (Fed and States)

    Advice to Management

What are you going to do if and when GTI losses government funding?
