I worked at Genentech as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent transportation options available to get you to and from work.

    Cons

Highly competitive work environment that focuses on quantity of work not quality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Creating a cut-throat, dog-eat-dog atmosphere only leads to errors, poor performance, and breeds animosity among peers.

I worked at Genentech full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I was fortunate enough to land a job at Genentech right after college. It is a great place to be as a new grad since you are surrounded by intellectual, motivated people and the benefits are great. This job has shaped me and provided me skills that I still use today and have learned from so many talented, experienced people.

    Cons

I did not feel that it was easy to advance at Genentech. After a few years, you have to either move to other departments within Genentech or leave since there is a glass ceiling that I found difficult to break unless you have a Ph.D. I also found that their salary is not as competitive as other similar companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide your employees room for growth and the ability to advance. I found that my manager did not provide me that guidance.

I have been working at Genentech full-time

    Pros

    Great pay and benefits
Work-life balance is considered tough by some but in comparison to some other big pharma companies, it's fine
This site has a growing sense of "team"
The site is running full speed ahead now, previous management challenges seem to be gone
The area around the site is a hidden gem, no desire to leave.
Great culture, definitely a sense of "work hard but play hard"
    Product pipeline is insanely good

    Cons

There is continuous improvement but it isn't well organized; lacks solid foundation and understanding of "value add"
Planning, scheduling, and link to marketing is clearly missing. Afraid to say "no" and balance production
Global procedures are slow to change and seem to be built to justify existence of an overly large global unit. The manufacturing sites need more independence
Class A falls far short of achieving World Class - lacks assessment of the culture
Not sure how the company will keep up with the new products being developed

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This site is heading in the right direction and simply needs time. Continue to drive improvement to processes and ensure the indicators are showing the right thing.
