I have been working at Genentech full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Still retaining some of the Genentech culture. Lot's of fun activities to show that the employer still cares about about the employees.

    Cons

Hard to advance in your career. You get bogged down in your position the longer you have been there. Since it's Genentech they have tons of applicants for every position, it is a very competitive environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support jobs shares and rotations. Make that an accepting culture in not just a few department, but across the board.

I have been working at Genentech full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    High growth, lots of opportunities

    Cons

Soft skills are very important here. Not being well-versed in soft skills can get you into trouble with politics. A lot of managers aren't very well-qualified as people managers. Business processes can be lacking or incomplete.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do a better job in hiring qualified people managers. Hold managers more accountable for their employee's performance.

I have been working at Genentech full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Mostly good people and good perks, particularly in SF. Now that Genentech is part of the Roche group, there is more opportunities worldwide which is a good thing.

    Cons

Not necessarily good at getting rid of poor performers. They somehow seem to linger on despite inadequate performance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More opportunities to move into leadership based on performance record, not who you know.
