ProsGrowing company; coworkers willing to help you when new.

ConsCompany is set in its ways and is very slow in evolving; resistant to change. Very strict PTO and hours; looked down upon if you are not in the office until 5 each day. Poor company culture - there are no "what's in it for me" benefits. Employees come to get their work done and leave. There is no effort in building relationships with team members.

Advice to Senior ManagementImmediate managers are not the problem - upper management needs to start changing the company culture.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Talk a good game during interview then work you to the bone.

ProsAlways lots of openings, due to constant turn around.

ConsThey talk about flexibility and family first during interviews but don't accommodate any requests once you are employed. You are expected to arrive early and stay late and without acknowledgement. Extremely draining atmosphere.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more flexible and accommodating to employees. Everyone has a personal life and most of us would like to see our families more.

ProsFlexibility when it comes to purchasing new equipment on the rare ocassions that they do, management doesn't take forever to justify the purchase of equipment.

Cons"That is the way we've always done it" attitude of management. Unprofessional work policies from Human Resources. Generac was started in a garage and still runs like it is in a garage.

Advice to Senior ManagementModernize your mindset and your policies.

    Too much management

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThey're remodeling the entire building so at least you will have that to look forward to. They just build a cafeteria so there's that.

ConsNon-designers get to share their opinion on everything and weigh in with their personal opinions that have no research to back it up.

A place to work when you can`t find anywhere else

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Eagle, WI

ProsThe work is easy with not much thought involved.Able to change jobs or departments(just takes forever) If you keep your head down and do your job you wont have any problems.

ConsThe pay seems substandard. Management is terrible, with very few exceptions.Have a question or something is not working the way it should who should you ask? A supervisor seems logical,no not here all they know is their "effectivity "reports, and don`t seem to have the time or knowledge to answer questions or address concerns you may have or they will "get back to you",which seldom happens.A general lack of respect toward manufacturing employees.Training is very substandard,a you`ll figure it out, atomsphere

Advice to Senior ManagementMake Generac a place people want to stay, not a place people are waiting to leave.
Drop the elitist management attitiude, have supervisors learn and know their area. Show respect to the people you supervise or manage.Pay quality employees a quality wage(outside of the office too)

    Beware

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Waukesha, WI

ProsCompany growing quickly in spite of the way it is managed. Lower level co-workers are great.

ConsManagement very elitist , if you don't have a VP in your title you are not one of the "Club"

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of the people who have given many years of service to the company

Every company has its good points and bad - Generac is no exception.

    Engineer (Former Employee)

ProsGenerac depends heavily on the individual efforts of its workers (read tribal knowledge). You also get exposure to a large variety of manufacturing methods. On a related note, the project content can be quite diverse. So, if you're an enterprising self stater, you can build up a resume quite quickly. Additionally, since the turnover is so high, it's easy to find good references. Generac is a good stepping stone. By and large, the people you work with are knowlegable, dedicated, and friendly. The environment itself is enjoyable. Although being the new guy on the block can be difficult, after a 1-2 years, you'll find your part of the fabric of Generac (there always seem to be new people arriving). Generac can be a rewarding place to work, but you had best be happy in the position you hire in as because few advancement growth opportunities exist in product development. That also means you should be sure to negotiate a starting salary that you're happy with as well.

ConsFirst, be aware that Generac has a very old school culture. If you work for Generac, your going to wear a tie. Second, If you're in product development, there is very little room for advancement. Generac doesn't groom or develop internal candidates for management positions in product development. Although, I find that this statement isn't true on the manufacturing side of the business. When I left, Generac had hired about 7 new product development managers off the street - not one internal candidate was promoted (and a few talented individuals do exist). Last item, the Generac insurance is difficult to do correctly (worse than average). There is a price for having cost effective health care. Plan on getting to know your administrators.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need to stop the revolving door. I've never had a problem with my immediate manager. I don't think that is where the problem is.

    Not So Great

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsIf you don't like to work too hard, you don't have to. But if you do, they will always expect you to.

ConsThe benefits are horrible -- worst I've ever had. Upper management pushes their personal views on the employees. Many of the management team are elitist. If you don't have manager, vp, etc. in your title they will completely ignore you. Other depts love to scream and yell and don't see any problem in it. Pay scale is completly out of wack. There is no loyalty to people who have been there a long time....they will pay you less then someone coming in. You get strung along without any promotions or increases while the "big dogs" keep making more money. I used to love my job and have grown to not the more I work here.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the employees, all of them. Get out of the old mindset and move towards the future. And please, get better health care - it really is horrible.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat opportunity to get into the power generation industry if that is what interests you. The company really is world-class in terms of leading the industry. The benefits package is very fair. The new CEO is younger and could potentially change some of the company's old ways.

ConsThe company is very "old boys club". Most of the upper managers have worked their way up in the company since it's early days (the company is only 50 years old) It is hard for young people to gain respect of managers, coworkers and company "lifers". The company is/was very very very antiquated in terms of work/life balance.
At the time I left, there was no "flex-time". Meaning as a salaried employee you had to work until 5 every day no matter what or take vacation time. You couldn't for example, work 7-4:30 on a day if you had to make it to the kids' soccer games by 5.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement certainly needs to respect and value education. They also should rapidly modernize the culture if they want to retain employees for the long term.
