I have been working at General Atomics full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

There is a lot of growth opportunity within the company IF you are a part of the inner team of decisions makers. Work hours are flexible and there is a gym.

    Cons

The work load comes like typical big DoD money, it starts and stops from a craw to a sprint. The raises are limited to just above inflation and Christmas bonus is one paycheck (this will be the only bonus you receive).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not hold your team members captive when your project slows down in fear of losing them to another project. If you do this, the team members will simply leave the team all together. Instead allow the team members to get cross functional training within and outside the department they are currently working. The knowledge they will obtain through the cross functional training is immense and extremely helpful for the engineer to understand a bigger picture.

I have been working at General Atomics full-time

    Pros

-9/80 schedule allows for every other Friday off
    -Exciting and well-known products
-Pension plan after three years of employment

    Cons

Misleading recruiting process. Favoritism is rampant; many departments have a "good 'ol boy" mentality. In these situations, if you are not "in" the clique, your life here will be very difficult. Training is non-existent. Constant bickering and infighting between departments. Unrealistic schedules. The company has a tendency to low-ball on salary, which causes positions to sit open for months. Constantly understaffed. Apathetic management that was more interested in making excuses and finding various cop-outs than acknowledging and correcting problems. Lack of basic break room amenities like plastic silverware and coffee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

So many things need drastic improvement. Training employees and investing more in employee salaries would help with staffing. Cheapskate maneuvers like not stocking break rooms and not allowing employees to have small appliances in their cubicles/offices are horrible for morale.

I have been working at General Atomics as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

None, they really are substandard in all areas. They promise positions and then reneg at the last minute. The tell lies all of the time.

    Cons

They flat out lie. I hope their company goes belly up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire good people instead of ex military under achievers.

    Pros

Your get a paycheck and benefits

    Cons

You will need those benefits to pay for your nervous breakdown. Accounting dept in particular. I have never worked so many hours and felt so unappreciated. They could not pay me enough to stay. Mgrs are bullies and not just a few. I even transferred to another dept within accounting and it's pretty much the same. The only people who are successful here are jerks.

I have been working at General Atomics full-time

    Pros

Cool products. Some really smart people. I really like my job, but the company culture is so bad that it makes most people disgruntled. Every other Friday off is nice.

    Cons

Horrible culture. Employees left out of the loop on purpose. Management tries to keep engineers talking to customers. A lot of infighting - multiple personal "kingdoms". Most supervisors not trained properly. HR is absolutely worthless. Two classes of people at GA: the managers and the "sorry people". Employees blamed for management screw-ups.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fat, Dumb, and Happy. So much money is thrown at this company that you can afford to have more managers than "worker bees". Managers should realize that they have a job due to the hard work of the people doing the work and charging direct to contracts. Don't hire experienced engineers to work for inexperienced managers. Chain of command extremely confusing. At least 3 managers per worker. Shape up before the rug gets pulled out from under you by your customers. Too many decisions made based upon personal relationships and not business based. Too many fire drills. Reactionary management vs. proactive management. Very poor communication to the employees, but I guess that's ok because employees can't be trusted at GA.

I have been working at General Atomics full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I earn money although it's much less than what I made 10 years ago doing the same job. Also, I have medical insurance.

    Cons

Everything pretty much sucks at GA-ASI. Have seen a lot of good people give up and leave because they got fed up with the BS; i.e. the good ole boy system run by former military staff who have no people skills. Management looks the other way because they only care that the job gets done, executive level management puts on a show with their Service Awards but the next minute they can't acknowledge underlings who work for them?!?! Expected to 'play well with others' who are disrespectful, condescending and who abuse their power. No one to turn to for work place issues; HR will throw you under the bus as will your very own manager. Archaic processes that should have been updated years ago. Very disappointed with this company in general, but I need medical coverage and an income to survive.

I have been working at General Atomics full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

9/80 Work Schedule and every other Friday Off.

    Cons

Low Pay. Absolutely no opportunity for advancement or growth. They have a company policy that you cannot move up into another position if it is more than 7% of your current pay. There are many internal talented employees that are not considered for positions due to this rule. It's absurd. They would rather hire from the outside and pay someone more than give a more than qualified internal employee the promotion and raise.
Poor Management. Too many Chiefs and too little Indians.
If you are retired Military, you are given a job even though you have no experience.
No matter how hard you work, you will receive the said raise as someone who is a total slacker.
No recognition for your work accomplishments
Awful Time Card System. No flexibility with time. No overtime allowed and if you do work overtime, it will be removed from your timecard.
There is no "team" mentality. Most departments would rather fight against each other than work together.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of your 7% rule and allow for internal growth for loyal and talented employees. Allow employees a clear career path and offer incentive and compensation for their hard work.
Get rid of useless overhead. There are so many people who slack off.
Just because someone was in the Military, does not make them qualified for a position.

I have been working at General Atomics full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay is competitive and you can qualify for an annual bonus. The technology is very interesting and you get to work with a lot military personnel, who are always appreciative of your hard work. Small tuition reimbursement and you have the ability to take computer training courses.

    Cons

Pour management and way to many "Chiefs". No career paths or set expectations for most employees. Don't expect to advance if you are younger. I've been told more then once that because I am young and have more potential, I should not expect to be promoted ahead of more senior co-workers. Leadership is seriously lacking and most are more then willing to throw you under the bus to get ahead. The culture is also unpleasant, there is no "team" mentality. Most departments would rather fight against each other than work together.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change up management & supervision especially in the high desert. Setup some type of career planning or advancement coaching for employees. Improve communication from the top down to minimize gossip and rumors.
