Projects are interesting, but cost-cutting and schedule leaves little room for proper design or innovation.

    Pros

Good atmosphere, interesting projects, company has never has layoffs

    Cons

Upward mobility difficult, no special job perks

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With projects being rushed to meet crazy schedules, job perks such as a cafeteria or more company parties would help morale.

I have been working at General Atomics full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The 9/80 work week is amazing. Having every other Friday off is huge.

Job security. The company is constantly growing and hiring.

Some of the managers really care about their teams and try to keep the morale up through group activities.

    Cons

Growth. The larger the company gets the more disconnected with its employees it becomes.

Some of the original employees are still working with the company and while that is great it sometimes enables them to feel invincible and beyond reprimand.

Some of the managers could care less about their teams and more about the end result of a project.

The HR department is in constant flux. Nothing seems confidential and you never know when your employees relations contact could change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't lose focus on your employees.
    Provide competitive raises.

I worked at General Atomics as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

Diverse projects from simple to seemingly impossible. Your projects will definitely push your knowledge of engineering fundamentals and their application. Fellow engineers are extremely helpful and courteous.

    Cons

All projects are distributed to a few lead engineers where they then disperse them out to the people in their groups. To me this made it hard for me to understand if I properly understood the requirements of the project as it was explained to me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For interns and new graduates, establishing a methodology for problem solving based/referenced upon company mechanics should be essential. It gives them the direct path for completing assignments efficiently and in a timely manner, as opposed to them taking a extended period of time finding out where and who to go to the hard way.

I have been working at General Atomics full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Pretty decent benefits, varied assignments, and 9/80 work schedule. The company seems to have a fairly normal work life balance.

    Cons

Unorganized. Could use more consistency in management team. Seems to be more reactive than proactive and results in rapid response efforts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees and try to support them. Many of them are overworked while others seem to be underutilized.

    Pros

GA-ASI is the kind of place that whole families go to work for. They are really not in the practice of firing anyone save for the extreme under performers. They spare no expense when it comes to outfitting your office as you feel you need in order to perform your duties.

    Cons

Politics. Unprofessional management staff. Families work there, so favoritism is constant and apparent. Certain Engineering disciplines still behave as though this is the wild West with very little documentation and little to speak of in the way of standardized business practices. HR crawls at a snail's pace so don't make any plans around your start date or around any promised promotions/pay increases.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more managers who actually want to be managers, and let engineers do the engineering.

    Pros

Safe secure employment. There is plenty of work to do here.

    Cons

When promoted from within, your increased income will be bare bone minimum. Get the amount of money you want before you get in.

    Pros

Good money, ok benefits, cool product

    Cons

Lame HR, so many rules and stupid processes, some managers are slave drivers (you should be happy to have a job). Everything is a priority so nothing is. Ever changing goals and long term stratiges

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire someone that know how to run a billion dollar company. Realize that multiple priorities with top status make everything take longer. EMPOWER YOUR EMPLOYEES
