I have been working at General Dynamics C4 Systems full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Very rewarding work. I feel like my job has a direct impact on the company's mission and goals. I know that others in the company also feel that their work contributes directly to the needs of the warfighter, that what their doing saves lives. I'm very satisfied with my work when I go home at the end of the day, and that's a great feeling.

    Cons

This is a big company, and with a big company comes a lot of management. Though the company has had to restructure, they have done so to make the business more efficient. Many complain about that change, but I see it as business-is-business. What are you going to do? All companies behave that way, they're simply looking to protect their future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest and open with your employees, they can take it. It's when you're quiet that they fill in the gaps with rumors and horrible comments.

I have been working at General Dynamics C4 Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Dedicated, knowledgeable workforce. Strong heritage and tradition from past continues in workforce. Solid reputation due to sterling reputation in SATCOM community. High level of diversity of product offering.

    Cons

Cronyism and incompetence rampant at the high levels of management, Executives have been embedded in positions of power for so long that they have no interest in rocking the boat. Everyone else is expendable. Cash is king, The bottom line rules, everyone else is just lucky to have a job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Connect with the folks on the floor. Remember when you worked shoulder to shoulder with them, before your buy-out and Founder's stock options were cashed.

    Pros

I myself struggle to find any positives. I believe in what General dynamics as a whole does for our troops and the difference they make for law enforcement.

    Cons

Management sucks, pass blame and will not take responsibility. So many great employees have left due to struggles within this company not to mention use and abuse concerning temp employees (Some been there 5+ years).

    Losing good engineers.

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at General Dynamics C4 Systems

    Pros

The engineers that are there are good, work hard and put out good products.

    Cons

In transition from a large contract and not managing it well. Management stripped good engineers away, froze or downgraded benefits and is now dealing with a large exodus of good experienced engineers. Management focus on short term bonuses and profits with no thought for the future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change. You've lost good people by going for a very shortsighted bottom line.

I have been working at General Dynamics C4 Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

A lot of good and smart people to work with. Projects range from boring and old technology to interesting and cutting technology.

    Cons

The majority of the managers suck (i.e., lack of common sense, and courtesy for people as individuals.) Look on glass doors, however, and you will see that bad management is a problem in a majority of companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get the bad managers OUT. Talk to the people being managed to find out what makes them feel like they matter and are valued contributors... that's what makes a project run well. It certainly isn't treating employees like they are replaceable machines. Replace many of the poor current managers with those that care about employees as people AND have common sense AND know how to meet the business objectives. Just meeting the business objectives without attention to the employees and doing things with common sense DOES cause good people to leave and ultimately result in being unable to perform.

This company would be nothing without the name.

Current Employee - Software Developer in Scottsdale, AZ
Current Employee - Software Developer in Scottsdale, AZ

I have been working at General Dynamics C4 Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

If you're fresh-out of college, they'll hire you very easily.
Most people are very laid back.
There is somehow a respect for software developers, among the other "engineers" - they think you're really smart.
If you're retired from the armed forces, you'll have a "forever home" here. (Con: if you're not one among this group of people, you'll have every little common ground with your colleagues, and worse yet, management)

    Cons

There are tons of managers - you'll have at most two "manager type" people who know and might appreciate your work - but there are usually 4-5 layers of additional managers above that within any section of the engineering staff. There are tons of sections, too. With so many managers, and the fact that they play "musical chairs" every few months, you'll never know them, they'll never know you - but they control your merit increases just the same. So, unless you have a great direct manager - one who has been at the company a long time, and has held rank above his position - nobody can, or will, vouch for your work...

This is a very poor place to have a fulfilling career as a software developer...
...the majority of senior developers' seniority come from the number of time sheets they've submitted; never mind their ability to guide your career and mentor you through your struggles. If you're hard-working, you'll quickly outpace all of the senior guys, and then realize that they're getting paid 90+ and you, much much less. Hard pill to swallow, as you realize there are no merit increases coming your way, and it's nearly impossible to earn a compensation increase either. Most senior engineer's (software developers) are stuck in the 90's - where there wasn't much special technology coming out, aside from Standard Edition Java and .NET - and they're still livin' it up in the 90's! The business also has a proven track record of abandoning certain factions of developer's hard work: every *worthwhile* senior developer I have met here, has a very depressing story about how a great idea was lost on the poor decisions and lack of interest by the managers and business development team.

People are flooding out of here like crazy - with the majority of people staying only for pension benefits, because they're too tired to jump back out on the job market, or that they literally couldn't get hired anywhere else.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Firstly, you should heed the advice of these reviews: they're very much a raw depiction of how it is at GDC4S, and you wouldn't know because you're not involved.

    Give your employees better tools:
    - from the software developer's point of view -
Stop pushing "one size fits all" technology across the business. Software developers thrive in the open source world, and you're not taking any advantage of it by dumping boat loads of cash into IBM. Do what your company is supposed to do: INTEGRATE - Just one Google search on the top: software change-management, continuous-integration, defect tracking, software collaboration, etc - will unveil the strikingly poor decisions being made by... who the heck knows? Realize that with creativity, you can allow for multiple professional realms to collaborate in the same environment even with different tools.
    - from a broader point of view -
The idea that the SharePoint server is actually making the business more effective in any way possible, is a myth. Due, partly to the sheer mediocrity of SharePoint, and then mostly in your complete disregard to the science and art of Knowledge Organization. The ability of working-groups to collaborate through documentation is dead. Try it: go type ANYTHING into the search engine, and try to glean an accurate result. These tools are nothing more than a novelty. Its totally frustrating to see how poorly any attempt to organize information in this business has been executed. There are at least 5 completely disparate repositories that any one piece of information might be placed, and nobody has the slightest clue where to find it. Talk to your employees, figure out what people need, then integrate, customize, and migrate.

I have been working at General Dynamics C4 Systems full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Sometimes the projects are challenging and rewarding. Although these are getting fewer.

Had some nice stability during the recession.

    Cons

Becoming more and more of who you are in good with.
Real knowledge is not as respected. You get more respect by overhyping what you might know and dancing around the gaps. Unfortunately happens sometimes when things are critical. Helps if you are somone's "pet".
More interested in meeting the letter or requirements than the spirit. And even then a lot of stuff gets out that doesn't meet reqs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on making things that work, not just pass reqts.

Sometimes the 90% solution in 1 day is better than the 99% solution in 3 months.

BreK up some of the ol' boy circle. GD seems to breed them.

I have been working at General Dynamics C4 Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very intelligent and hard working employee base
Customers and their missions make the work worthwhile

    Cons

    Employees are seen as disposable
Longer term employees are being laid off and replaced by inexpensive fresh outs, losing a lot of experience and intellectual IP
Very short term and only financial based focus -- no look to the future

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to transform this company to meet the challenges of the new world of defense not just handle the current budget down turns by cutting staff and costs and thinking you can weather the storm by focusing on EBITA. This company needs to reinvent itself.
