    Difficult place to work,

Senior Buyer (Former Employee) Ottawa, ON (Canada)

    ProsSalary and benefits were good.

ConsDepending on Manager very difficult to be respected. I had a Senior Manager steel my idea and presented it to the executive as his own, very disappointed and disheartening.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Alright

Systems Engineer (Former Employee) Ottawa, ON (Canada)

    Pros- Good people
    - Good pay and benefits
    - Good work-life balance

Cons- Extremely slow pace of innovation
    - Beaurocratic
    - Very top-heavy

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow a much greater bottom-up input from emploiyees. There was virtually none, and a substantial top-down organizational culture

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

    Morale not great

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Ottawa, ON (Canada)

ProsInteresting work when there is work. Most employees are easy to get along with and knowledgeable in their fields. Benefits are decent.

ConsUpper management does not plan far enough ahead. Company is in the process of outsourcing factory workers, engineers, designers etc. Layoffs for years which has caused horrific morale.

Advice to Senior ManagementOutsourcing is not the answer. You will get short term gain and long term pain.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

It was good at the beginning, went downhill in the last few years.

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsDecent compensation (although falling slightly behind compared with the rest of the pack), flexible work schedule (every second Friday off if you work one hour longer days), a turkey for Christmas.

ConsLots of inefficiency and bureaucratic rad tape, outdated and rigid processes. System architecture and engineering which should lead the development is often either too late or irrelevant. The company is seemingly losing the edge over other competitors in the cut-throat defence market, hence a steady trickle of layoffs.

Advice to Senior ManagementWith the development cycles as long as they are now and the overhead as high as it is the company will not be able to win enough bids to sustain itself in the long run. And for God's sake, improve the IT support - it's terrible.

GD Canada is losing its lustre as a reasonable company to work for... the paint is chipping off...

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Ottawa, ON (Canada)

    Pros- fair compensation, good benefits
    - structured environment
    - defined job roles
    - subsidized cafeteria on campus
    - flexible work week (can work 10 days in 9 and get every 2nd Friday off)

Cons- difficult to move between departments
    - unionized environment
    - very old school
    - very difficult to implement change or get new ideas going
    - only 3 weeks vacation for management staff (typical is 4 weeks in Canada)

Advice to Senior Management- GD Canada needs to pay more attention to employee morale
    - needs to be stronger when dealing with the Unions (they typically cave at the first sign of a grievance)

    Tolerable.

Senior Electrical Engineer (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsReasonable pay, flexible work hours.every second Friday off. Good associations with colleagues. Some opportunities to learn and grow, some travel.

ConsPoor recognition of effort and competence. Poor organization of projects and roles. Management not helpful in getting work done; sometimes management is the biggest problem.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to employees regarding organization of projects, assignments, roles. Don't just focus on the short-term bottom line. Focus on delivering long-term value to the customer. Do things that will make the customer appreciate you and trust you for months and years to come.

    Decent perks, crazy business practices

Systems Engineer (Former Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsSome of the great things about GDC is the compressed work week. Although the days are long, it can buy you an extra day off every two weeks which is invaluable during the summer months. The benefits are so-so along with the pay, but everything is negotiable there and if you use the right manipulative tactics there, you can bully HR around in the good times.

ConsThe place is incredibly mismanaged. When projects die people are left to their own devices to grovel for work elsewhere and it leaves you feel like you are playing musical chairs. Individuals are allowed to move around regardless of the state of the project they are leaving. Often there is no accountability to work done in the past. Senior Management seems to be all over the spectrum with an inability to manage large programs, understand the customer or lead a team.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet some training.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
