I have been working at General Dynamics Information Technology

    Pros

The benefits are very comparable and competitive with other company's in the industry. High volume travel increases salary through per diem expenses.

    Cons

Personal interaction with company leaders is virtually non-existent; work-place climate surveys do not occur; daily timecard input are distracting and unnecessary for most employees in my group; chain of command/ supervisory chain is confusing and often contradictory from office to office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow more employee flexibility and negotiations to better balance work/travel commitments. For those employees who travel 25% or more of the time, additional flex time and or project-based, results-based assignments could be implemented to allow employees to take the best advantage of their own time and schedules without interfering with routine requirements thus increasing overall actual productivity of the employee.

I have been working at General Dynamics Information Technology full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Never bored, plenty of variety on the contract I am on.

    Cons

If the contract you are on is lost, you have a couple weeks to find a new job internally of they will kick you to the curb.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Employees are assets.

I have been working at General Dynamics Information Technology

    Pros

Growth potential, educational opportunities and advancement due to the number of positions and locations available to work.

    Cons

The same institutional problems of large companies exist. Culture changes needed and more action vs. words on taking care of employees who make money for them by supporting customers on the front line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You should listen to more than other senior managers to get a real understanding of what goes on at the workers level in resolving issues and improving what GDIT has done over the last 15 years.

They try to treat employees fair.

    Cons

Not enough employees working to get the job done efficiently.

I worked at General Dynamics Information Technology as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

The comapny made it very easy to get on with them and provided all the information needed to perform the tasks

    Cons

They will fire you for any small thing. I worked for this company in the past year and resigned because I had a ill new born child that I had to tend to management talked to me and told me that it was best to resign and I did so. Finally decided to go back and got hired easily becamqe ill myself for 2 days in training provided documentation from a Doctor and they terminated me, gave me the run around about my employment with the company for 2 months. If you want to work with this company make sure you have no out side life and don't get sick because they do not care.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn that people want to provide their best with the company but things happen try to be empathetic of your employees. The job is nott easy from a long shot so please be considerate of the one's that work under you.

I have been working at General Dynamics Information Technology

    Pros

GDIT has strong ethical values and is well respected in the Federal contracting world, having a very strong relationship with CMS. Compensation is very good.

    Cons

GDIT's non-monetary compensation is inferior to its local competitors. They do a less than stellar job of employee retention at contract end. There is no "bench" and very poor support for staff at risk.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Need stronger employee retention program.

I have been working at General Dynamics Information Technology full-time

    Pros

Decent people for the most part. It's a big company, and not going anywhere. Lots of opportunities if you don't mind traveling.

    Cons

Upper management has no loyalty to anything but the profit line. Do not believe anything you are promised about future work or guarantees--once the project ends they would rather lay you off. Saw two very high up bosses get canned unfairly, and saw many people promised positions when the execs promising the spots had no intention of following through. It's a tough business, for sure, so all I can say is watch out for number one and make sure you find another project to move to WELL BEFORE you need to.
