I have been working at General Dynamics as an intern

    Pros

Working for one of the top defense companies in the world is such an amazing opportunity. I'm fortunate to be on a team with nurturing full-timers, a caring supervisor, and mutually supportive interns. I couldn't ask for a better internship.

    Cons

Relationships with supervisors, full-timers, and interns is a bit of a crap shoot. I know some interns are miserable with the teams they ended up with. Because of the competitive nature of the internships, peer reviews can be scathing at times.

    Advice to Management

Have a period where interns rotate through different teams then have a mutual selection process vs. randomly assigning interns and hoping for the best.

    Pros

Fast paced, great opportunity for advancement.

    Cons

So big many people could get overwhelmed.

    Advice to Management

Try to keep things on a smaller, personal level with direct employees if possible.

    Pros

I am able to work 40 hours and often we are given an opportunity to go TDY to different other locations

It is a contract job, working on contract there really is no job security

I worked at General Dynamics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It was a decent group of people, and I enjoyed being around most of them. Compensation was fine for the Midwest.

    Cons

The culture is entirely about keeping parts moving toward shipping. The normal response to a defect is to keep processing while the customer documents their acceptance of the failure. The entire company seems to have skipped school the day they talked about "continuous improvement." Management does not tolerate questions or any challenge of decisions. It's a very 1960's organization and culture. They mention the word "team" but being a team player means only that you do what you're told - what management wants. It's a demoralizing, stifling culture that drains the life out if anyone who wants to contribute to making the place better.

    Advice to Management

Grow up. You're not smarter than the people working for you. And just because you talked your way into jobs you weren't qualified for doesn't make you right. And try to remember there are facts, and when you don't know something, those other thoughts you have are called "opinions" - and they aren't the same thing. Just because you're thinking something doesn't make it right.

I have been working at General Dynamics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits and work environment. Co-workers are superb and constantly strive to improve our product. General Dynamics is Vet friendly and this particular job allows me to remain in contact with the Navy.

    Cons

Challenge of maintaining schedules in the face of ship delivery and Navy crew needs. At times, it is tough getting final design and technical support information from government/3rd party vendors.

    Advice to Management

More clarity on build schedules and timelines.

I worked at General Dynamics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The company has great health benefits and retirement savings matching. I took advantage of their tuition reimbursement plan to get a Master of Science degree. The management at GD was also very open and direct about the vision for the company. I loved working to support the armed services and making difference on the war on terror.

    Cons

Business decisions were not always well thought out by senior leadership especially in GDC4S and as a result, a lot of money was wasted on projects that had weak business cases.

    Advice to Management

GDC4S needs a new vision and growth strategy that is competitive to the offerings from Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and BAE. Being the best integrator of other people's technology will limit GDC4S to being a marginal player and will not be sustainable in the long term.
