I worked at General Motors as an intern

    Pros

great atmosphere, very business casual dress code, easy to move around within the company, everyone is friendly

    Cons

some people who worked there longer might stress the old values of the automotive industry versus the innovative new ways that IT centers work

I worked at General Motors as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

Lots being done to increase company culture and the new direction in products is awesome. Lots of opportunities for young engineers. High level of responsibility and mobility. The benefits, including trying out different GM cars, is neat. The salary is great and everyone that I worked with was a pleasure. Teamwork was imbedded in everything.

    Cons

The midwest is quite a con unless you are from the midwest. Much of the company is fighting to free itself from some old structuring that creates a lot of red tape and forces operation as silos. This means that communicating across departments is often a lot less than it can or should be. There is a need to establish itself as a more diversified company that is aimed at a larger range of buyers and that holds environmental issues at a higher position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Break down the silos, they make more work and decrease synergy.

I worked at General Motors full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

You get paid a lot for what you do. You won't find this kind of pay anywhere. The benefits are great & you also have the union behind you.

    Cons

The demand on you is tough at times, especially when you start off. You get moved around a lot & you may get stuck on a shift that you don't like.

I have been working at General Motors full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The culture is continually evolving to meet the needs and wants of employees. The company takes great effort into improving employee engagement. A workplace of choice survey is given and actions are taken to ensure improvement.

    Cons

Large company pains = lots of IT issues and overly complicated processes sometimes. Job opportunities can seem limited to your "silo" unless you do some serious networking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A company sponsored lease program would be great!
