I worked at General Motors as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Close knit community with coworkers in same area. Great way to make connections. Able to speak with leadership and communicate ideas and concerns.

    Cons

Overtime is looked down upon since you are supposed to finish work in shift. Very stressful with various projects to complete and customers to assist in one day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire enough people to carry out the designated projects and expected duties instead of trying to have the employees spread so thin to save money.

    General Motors Intern

I have been working at General Motors as an intern for more than a year

    Pros

The people that work here are awesome. As an intern, I never had the feeling of being unable to ask someone for help. People are busy but they are more than welcome to take some time to explain things. They will also take time out of their day to explain what their job is or what their function does. Depending on who you get for a supervisor/manager has a big impact on how your experience is.

    Cons

General Motors is a slower moving company but that comes with size.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Use some of your influence to implement what your employees are suggesting. Also, do not put all your effort to reaching the short goals. Try to focus on implementing some of the suggestions from employees and meeting your goals will follow.

Former Employee - Assistant Communications Manager

I worked at General Motors full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Compensation and benefits were good (including 18 paid holidays) with frequent raises, promotions or opportunities to move within the function, whether or not you have relevant experience. The jobs I had were always a lot of fun and I was friends with most of the people I worked with.

    Cons

It was frustrating that they could take the same position and fill it with someone with a high level person with 20 years experience (and pay them for that) and then the next moment fill the same position with someone with hardly any experience at a much lower level and pay band. It doesn't make sense that level and compensation varys so much when the job description and requirements remain the same throughout.

Former Employee - Production Supervisor in Grand Rapids, MI

I worked at General Motors full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The best reasons for working at General Motors was the pay level. The pay was good although I worked many long hours. I was, however, compensated for overtime hours.

    Cons

The culture at General Motors was large and slow moving. It was a challenge , at times, to try to accomplish ideas and projects. It would take time to move through channels to accomplish your goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give talented people the leeway to run with ideas to help the company.

I have been working at General Motors full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Lots of resources. Many highly qualified and talented people. Reasonable work life balance.

    Cons

Lots of management. Lots of meetings. Slow.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fewer levels of management and a flatter organization would help. Stop the promotion based on how many directors you know process.

I have been working at General Motors full-time for more than a year

    Pros

the best part was the pay. hard to get fired all you have to do is fallow really basic rules, and come in on time, go on breaks and return when scheduled (this has leeway). do your job to the ability of an average 40 year old could make due with. about an hour worth of breaks each day, they are split apart.

    Cons

worst part was the repetitive work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

keep on doing what you are doing, you're not bad at all stop being hard butts sometimes and be more friendly and be more firm with rules with quality issues.

    Pros

People, mentoring, great benefits & pay

Difficult to advance without a degree (experience and work ethic should count), long hours and physical work. Supervision is moved around and dont get adequate training which makes.it difficult for the employees to adjust.
