I worked at Genesee & Wyoming full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Management does what it says it is going to do. Training is above average. The company supplies you with the tools necessary for the job and has a generous co-pay for work required boots.

    Cons

It is a short line that tries to act like a class 1. You have all of the negatives, long hours, antagonistic management, harsh working conditions ie: rain, snow, 100 degree plus days and freezing nights. All of that for less than half the pay of a class 1 railroad. They work you up to the Federal limit and then try to get more out of you. If you are working a job with weekends off, and you go on vacation, they will call you back the next Saturday to cover someone else's job and take away the weekend at the end of your vacation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mandatory 60 hours/week plus commute is too much. Being stuck on graveyard for the foreseeable future sucks the joy out of life. There needs to be better balance between hours on the job and time off.

    Pros

Benefits, benefits, benefits, benefits, and benefits

    Cons

Need more process improvement, too many people are being paid less to do more, a need for a project team to handle projects, there is no room to grow unless you been there for more than 7 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sr Management need to work more with employees and learn day to day issues, realize that employees are afraid to voice their concern because they feel they are not being heard, not valued enough, or will be fired, and develop an incentive program for employees to show them they are needed

I have been working at Genesee & Wyoming full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

One of the best jobs with no experince or degree required. Federal rules guarentee you will never work more than 9 hours a day. Excellent pay and benefits. Outstanding railroad retirment

    Cons

24/7/365 job. Antiquated HR polices. Little to no input on day to day operations. No local HR rep. Due to federal regulations and the seriousness of the job, there is a high attritation rate. Can be extremely stressful

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

ARDC needs office oversight. There are no written office policies or procedures which make it difficult to maintain a standard of service.

I worked at Genesee & Wyoming full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice office location; free parking. Good benefits and retirement plan if you can survive working there.

    Cons

Stuffy atmosphere in general; not open to new or creative solutions or suggestions. Be prepared to be "railroaded or voted off the island". Insincere coworkers make unpleasant situations worse.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider hiring and retaining the honorable worker and show the door to the conniving brown nosed.
