I have been working at Genomic Health as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

The fact I know everyone is working very hard to improve our patients lives in tandem with the approachable upper management keeps me coming back day after day with a smile.

    Cons

You wont find kitchens full of goodies like Google or Facebook, but if that is what gets you to work - you probably are not challenging yourself.

I have been working at Genomic Health full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Working in a cutting edge industry. Financial compensation is excellent. Laid back work environment with excellent work/life balance. Great location and interesting projects. You are given autonomy over your projects for the most part.

    Cons

Somewhat of a nerdy atmosphere. The cafeteria needs a MAJOR revamp. New hire training is too general and doesn't focus on the actual work that will be done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There seem to be many layers of management here with more emphasis on delegation and less emphasis on teamwork. It would be nice if everyone didn't focus so much on their title.

I have been working at Genomic Health full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great corporate culture that is mostly the result of great leadership and vision by the top management (CFO CMO and especially the CEO).

    Cons

I am not in the IT group, but its generally known that it's dysfunctional, inefficient, highly political and that it has low QA standards. Also, with the recent re-org it seems to be getting more and more top heavy (with upper management).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work! And hold on to the CEO Kim P! Her style really works wonders for morale. I look forward to all hands meetings

    IT
They don't seem to know that they are a service group. Their budget is ballooning and they need to be given less political power so they will be more responsive to the needs of their internal customers.

I have been working at Genomic Health full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

My team is positive, works hard, and interacts well with each other. We all come from different backgrounds and experiences, but we allow each other to have diverse opinions and work together to make decisions. I feel appreciated for my thoughts and I am heard.

I also influence change and process improvements easiliy here. When I worked for bigger companies, process change would get slowed down and there was so much red tape for approvals. Here you can make a difference seamlessly.

It is a relaxed atmosphere...you can wear jeans everyday. The executives are approachable and engaging.

Several fun employee events; better than some big company events.

    Good Employee Stock Purchase Program.

    Cons

I would advise increasing the 401K matching. Expand office building since we are growing so much.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep reinvesting back in the company

I have been working at Genomic Health

    Pros

Many external collaborators, auditors and vendors have basically summed it up, "Everyone here is so cheerful!"

As corny as it sounds, it's true. The workplace is comprised of friendly, hard-working, intelligent individuals who cooperate and innovate to contribute to a product we stand by: providing personalized medicine to patients with cancer. At every quarterly all-hands meeting we get to meet and learn the story behind an actual patient whose life was changed as a result of using Genomic Health's ODX Breast product.

By all other standard performance metrics, Genomic Health does just as well. Career advancement and development opportunities are encouraged. Clear, honest communication and a surprising amount of corporate visibility is the example set by upper management that serves as a template for interpersonal exchanges. Compensation is seriously deliberated upon, with emphasis on remaining competitive within the industry and equitable inside the organization. Along these lines, recognition, feedback and bonuses are linked to applaud the commitment employees have to meeting challenges with enthusiasm.

    Cons

As Genomic Health continues to grow, typical business growing pains surface: new organizational structures, increased documentation requirements, and a dilution of communication. Given these challenges, Genomic Health is taking a proactive approach by maintaining a culture of truth seeking and honest feedback and a willingness to be flexible in how the organization grows while continuing to progress toward clear, short- and long-term goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The new employee breakfast with Randy was a great experience. I appreciated the opportunity to learn first-hand about his vision and motivations behind starting the company. Maintaining the connection between upper management and task-based employees is a challenge as companies grow, but I'd encourage Randy and the executive team to keep in touch with everyone. There's a lot to be said about feeling visible (and accountable) in an organization.

I have been working at Genomic Health full-time

    Pros

On your first day you are handed a book called "Strengths Finder" and you are encouraged to learn about what you truly can bring to the table. The management invests in each employee and empowers them. I feel inspired everyday that I work here and I'm highly motivated. There is no focus on "face time". As long as you contribute and do your part, you are free to have a flexible schedule.

    Cons

Some full time employees can be almost too focused on their work and don't take the time to go for lunch/socialize with the new hires and help them integrate more with the group.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the gummy bears and chocolate, I'm gaining weight!! ;)
