Overall, I found working at Gentex to be a positive experience

Team Member (Former Employee) Holland, MI

ProsI found the work environment to be very social and fun. I looked forward to going to work.

ConsTheir raise program is nothing short of insulting. I was told that, if you received a great review, you could receive up to 50 cents in a raise every 6 months. Not true. I always got glowing reviews and like 18 to 22 cent raises. There is no true advancement unless you volunteer to give up all your free time to take classes. Then you "might" get a few extra cents in your raises.

Advice to Senior ManagementShould really cut back on the brainwashing quarterly meetings. It's common knowledge how management rewards themselves with big nights on the town while the people on the floor get nothing.

Good company to work as an engineer.

Systems Engineer (Former Employee) Zeeland, MI

ProsStarted as contractor and moved to permanent employee. Each employee is given a good share of personal responsibility. I quickly took charge of several projects and at some points even directed other engineer's efforts, even as a relatively junior engineer.

ConsWhile Gentex itself is a great company, there are some groups and individuals, even managers, who are quite pretentious. Gentex even got labeled by an external business consultant hired by upper manage as an arrogant company. However, there are many humble employees, and there is a large pool of impressive talent in the engineering dept.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to drive for excellence, but beware of pride. Even well deserved pride leave a bad taste in employees and customers proverbial mouths.

    Good but missed the boat.

    Engineer (Former Employee) Zeeland, MI

ProsBeautiful facilities. Fitness center. Options have been lucrative in recent years.

ConsCulture in decline. Stagnant innovation. For the first time, top talent is leaving.

Advice to Senior ManagementAround 5 years ago, you were at a pivotal point where EC and SmeartBeam were dominating, RCD looked like it could explode and you had assets in place to expand into ADAS. As you have always done with ADAS, you failed to press the issue, again. Through a combination of mismanagement of R&D (LDW and Palantir) and a failure to do more than dip your toe in the problem space, you missed the wave.

Now, SmartBeam will be whipped by packaged ADAS feature sets on advanced cameras, RCD is being crowded out by center stack displays and you bet the farm on what? Second-hand GDO tech? Off-the-shelf ADAS integration?

What are your pillars? Uncap creativity. Be bold. Tell the truth.

Getting to know the real Gentex

    Manager (Former Employee) Zeeland, MI

ProsIf you are an hourly employee the company is good, quarterly profit sharing bonuses and full medical insurance.

ConsCompany boasts they are a family oriented team, this is no longer the case! Been letting long time salary employees go to hire younger, cheaper, and less experienced ones in with the wording of 'Job Elimination' even though it has not been. Gentex started building and expanding way to fast in hopes the child act ruling would move forward on time, this did not happen and is still being postponed.

Advice to Senior ManagementGentex is no longer the 'great' company to work for with employees being respected, acknowledged, and advanced due to hard work, dedication, and knowledge of product. Bring back those days and stop taking advantage of your workers leaving them in fear all the time.

    Love / Hate Relationship

Lead Engineer (Former Employee) Zeeland, MI

ProsUltra clean workplace, on-site fitness facility, profit sharing bonus equal across entire company, stock options.

ConsManagement preaches open communication and that all voices are respected and valued, but the reality is that you are not valued. Recent restructuring has proved that the management does not value loyalty and good workers - it values cheaper workers and people that follow blindly.

Advice to Senior ManagementPractice what you preach.

A good place to start and learn, which allowed me to move on to a bigger and better job

Production Support Engineer (Former Employee) Zeeland, MI

ProsFree soft drinks; new, modern, and clean facilities; innovative technology and products; quarterly bonuses; most of the people are friendly and nice. Gentex provides great training for new engineers: TWI, TPS, TPS Workshop, Leadership Launch Pad, DiSC Workplace Profile, etc.

ConsWorked 55-60+ hours each week for a $40,000 salary, due to the company's overly lean mentality in which they are over focused on cost cutting and are always lacking in obtaining appropriate capital/equipment and staffing to meet customer demand. Many of my operators made more per year than I did since I didn't get paid overtime. Salary is based too heavily on stocks and quarterly bonuses. Work demand was too heavy for the amount they are willing to compensate. High turnover due to "burn out" (typically working 9 to 10 hour days and at least two weekends a month for the same $40,000 salary). Management often micro-manages, and there is a lack of communication from the top down (a lot of gossip and rumors) and suffers from the "in crowd" plague.

Advice to Senior ManagementReact more proactively to growth and acquire the appropriate equipment and staffing; be more open in communication; reduce the workload of production engineers; give better compensation.

There are many reasons to work at Gentex...but pay is not one of them.

Mechanical Engineer (Current Employee) Zeeland, MI

    ProsNice facilities
Up to date technology and computer systems
    Overall a comfortable environment

ConsMechanical engineering takes a back seat to other disciplines like software and electrical, because the mechanical side of the product is not the core IP. This results in a significantly lower base salary. In general, salary is low compared to equivalent companies, and Gentex tries to make up for that with profit sharing but doesn't quite get there. The ME work I found quite boring, and I saw my job turning into a CAD designer.
Lastly, I wonder about the legality of the interview questions. An example, "Do you feel you had a normal childhood". Hmmmm.
