I have been working at Genzyme full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are two major perks of working at Genzyme. The first is a generous vacation package, which includes an end-of-year shutdown. The other is a good 401(k) matching program.

    Cons

The old system of merit-based annual compensation seems to be a thing of the past. Raises are now extremely low for everyone across-the-board. There isn't as much motivation to push oneself, except out of a sense of "company loyalty," by which Genzyme has far overplayed its hand.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would like to see management return to the structure of merit-based raises and compensation for its high performers, and do away with the current "9-box" system of annual reviews in which people are forced into the same generic "standard" bracket, regardless of their actual performance.

I have been working at Genzyme as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

The benefits aren't bad. People are good to work with depending on department. Good way to get experience but not a company that appreciates employees.

    Cons

Management is awful. Lack of experience clearly shows. Can't retain employees and high turn around rate. extremely low moral.

I have been working at Genzyme full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There are small pockets of excellent people that are truly focused on doing what's right. The science is excellent and is the major attraction that keeps people.

    Cons

Constantly reorganizing.. political environment.. poor leadership.. high turnover.. low pay.. It's the kind of place where you go to get experience and then move on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put the senior leadership team under a magnifying glass and look at them objectively. You may be very surprised at what you discover. Peal back the political layer. Look at the redundancy in the management structure. There's some obvious reasons why the turnover is so high. Hold the management staff and SLT accountable for all the business results, not just a handful of metrics.

I have been working at Genzyme full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Excellent benefits: Generous time off, 401k match, medical, company discounts, bonus structure, etc.
    - Work/life balance: You can work from home almost anytime you want. 7-8 hours in the office is a typical work day, even for managers. Flexible schedules. Very laid back.

    Cons

    - Awful raises, regardless of performance.
    - Promotions are based solely upon seniority and office politics. It doesn't matter how good you are at your job or how hard you work....if an incompetent person has seniority over you or is "connected", they will get the promotion. This is rampant throughout the entire organization.
    - Endless layers of useless management.
    - Silo'd environment. Nobody knows what other groups are working on, or what their business processes are.
    - No Career development opportunities. You perform a small set of tasks with no chance to learn anything new. This is Sanofi's business model.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Create more career development opportunities for employees.
    - Remove the multiple layers of useless managers and spend that money on raises for hard working employees.
    - Promote the people who actually deserve it.

I have been working at Genzyme full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Great benefits/401K/PTO
    - Robust pipeline
    - Seeing our therapies are changing lives
    - Associates are very dedicated to the patients/cause

    Cons

    - Overly bureaucratic
    - Too many unproductive meetings
    - Few opportunities for advancement - favoritism by Management is rampant
    - Distinct "cliques"
    - Terrible raises
    - Low morale - no one ever seems happy
    - HR dept is ineffective at best

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at the wealth of fresh talent to add to the management team. Same legacy Genzymers keep being promoted while their favorites ride their coat tails. Improve HR dept so that employees feel that if they reach out for help, it will be confidentially addressed.

I worked at Genzyme full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Some good people, some good scientific knowledge, people very dedicated to the company

    Cons

Lack of leadership, long hours/little work-life balance (many of the "in" people practically live there), very political environment, little recognition/appreciation, poor control of management processes

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take control, or get out of the way.

I have been working at Genzyme full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I believe in what the company stands for.

    Cons

The Allston Facility has had the life sucked out of it due to lack of proper leadership. Senior "leaders" are tucked away in their exclusive club, planning how to reduce headcount over the next few years, while doing a horrible job of communicating the reality of the future. They plan to consolidate the organization's structure, leading to reduced opportunities for advancement, and ultimately leading to good people wanting to leave. The engagement level at the company is terrible right now, despite a "dedicated team" trying to fix it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire real leaders and stop promoting technical experts. They are part of the reason you are under a consent decree to begin with. They have lost the trust of many at the employees in the organization.
