I worked at Ghirardelli Chocolate full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The only pro is that you have access to the food product that they sell.

    Cons

    - Upper management is ruthless and uncaring to the needs of its staff -if you're not a well-liked employee, you get closing shifts every day -disjointed days off - the closing shifts are honestly the worst. you're on your feet all day and have to get through hundreds of customers in the same fake voice, and you have to upsell their Illinois-shipped cookies and fly-infested strawberries- if the customer declines, you have to try upselling them overpriced water bottles. If that still fails, you have to upsell their crappy resuable bags. You have to repeat the same thing every couple of minutes with a smile. It's really difficult to maintain because customers are often tourists and treat you like absolute crap. - you are expected to "jump on register" or "hop on fountain (food prep)" anytime it gets busy. There's no real breakroom and you have eat your lunch next to garbage cans in the locker room area, or on the stairs in the hotel that this location is apart of. -no matter how hard you work, it's not noticed. You are reprimanded if you don't upsell.

    Advice to Management

Your employees are people. Treat them as such.

I worked at Ghirardelli Chocolate full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

For the work that you're doing you get paid way too much. For the most part co-workers are cool and relaxed. Fun environment to be in. union (kinda)

    Cons

They're a union controlled corporation so theres tons of red-tape around everything from getting direct deposit to health insurance to simply changing schedules. Also the hiring as an absolute crapshoot, it seems like hiring managers don't care about attitudes or qualifications and as a result you end up having to work with immature and unprofessional people. also being union everything is done on a seniority basis. besides one or two stars most management is unorganized and unprofessional.

I worked at Ghirardelli Chocolate full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Upper management was very nice but they didnt have a framework as to what its really like behind the scenes. Lots of hrs pay decent but you work for it

    Cons

Too many supervisors very picky about speed and consistency alot of the trainers did not care as a matter of fact the very first words out of her mouth was " nobody cares about your feelings here" . I was like lady its ice cream not the marines. Lake buena vista is a very busy location with alot of tourists. Diversity is great but must be able to communicate effectively in a loud environment. I was very claustrophobic and felt damned if you do and damned if you dont

  6. Fun work environment that is undercut by poor management and over-scheduled employees.

I worked at Ghirardelli Chocolate (Less than a year)

    Pros

Free access to chocolate, ice cream. Friendly, enthusiastic environment to work in Competitive pay

    Cons

Non-existent benefits Poor management Stressful during peak hours when the confectionery is full Corporate can be cut-throat/brutal to employees if they do not maintain the Company's image and work ethic. Corporate management can fire you on the spot if you make a mistake Hours are non-negotiable. Volatile scheduling. You must be available to work "on-call"

    Advice to Management

Respect your employee's scheduling requests. I requested to work part-time, 20-25 hours a week. By the 4th week I was scheduled to work 38 hours. It seems that there is a disconnect between the corporate management and the general manager/supervisors.

    Pros

Free chocolate if you want it...

    Cons

No work/life balance for management, high turnover for store managers, senior management unaware of what happens in stores, favoritism prevelant, they get a lot of value and work out of you for the money they pay you, which turns into a bargain for them.

    Advice to Management

Make surprise visits to stores to see what really happens

    Pros

Delicious chocolate products, 3 weeks PTO, 401k match, central location in the bay area, good for commuting.

    Cons

Extreme favor-tism of some employees, weak management, no communication within the company. Many employees leave the company after a few years -- repeated stress with little recognition. Employees that deliver no results are often promoted because they are politically strong. Results mean nothing - your political abilities are most important here. Other employees just check out and do the minimum. Every task is difficult to get done. Management will not communicate directly with employees with any meaningful information. In fact, they are visibly uncomfortable or try to hide information if asked. The management team is somewhat of a black hole - and they are very unfamiliar with their own business. They rely very heavily on junior employees to pull the weight of the company and justify every decision. Long term planning is not possible.

    Advice to Management

Be honest and forward with communication. Get involved int he work - don't just stand by and criticize.
