I have been working at Giant Eagle full-time

    Pros

My coworkers are some of the best people I know and many have become friends outside of work.

    Cons

Merit increases are laughable; there is a complete lack of professional development. The company is trying to run lean but has far exceeded lean and delved into bare bones causing a complete absence of work-life balance. Morale is at an all-time low and people are constantly wondering when their department is the next to 'restructure' and/or have to interview for their own jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your team. Really listen - and stop retaliating against those who have the courage to talk. You were great once, you can be again.

I worked at Giant Eagle part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Used to be a great place to work, good benefits, they cared if you had a good work ethic. Its changed.

    Cons

Management cares about numbers and their own bonuses. I will not name them here but there is sexual harassment going on in this company at store level. Management has said off color things to me and other women. I was penalized due to my speaking up. There have already been lawsuits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire the Walmart rejects you brought in. Do a undercover boss type thing. Your store managers are worthless. Good long term employees are quitting because of the poor management and lack of direction.

I have been working at Giant Eagle full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Very little, maybe it was just the store I was employed at, but it was a hellish nightmare.

    Cons

Please read what others have wrote, I cannot verbalize my feelings for this putrid business.

I worked at Giant Eagle part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Plenty of hours if you want them. Many hours, some nice people

    Cons

No one helps you, not enough training for the job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need more training for people who are struggling. If you see someone who is struggling with the job maybe someone should help or offer more training

I have been working at Giant Eagle part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Coworkers are great. Majority of stores are union.

    Cons

Millions of cons with this company. I could write a novel about this section.
Cutting hours for Hourly team members across the board
    Micro-management everywhere and anywhere
Corporate thinks they are better than EVERYONE.
    Customers can be very degrading
    Zero recognition

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Select more team members from the talent pool. Those who have college degrees and are having a difficult time at finding a job. Giant Eagle would rather bring in people from outside of the company instead of their own.

I have been working at Giant Eagle part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The union represents it's workers well.

    Cons

Almost all retail employees are hired at part-time. Sure there will be times when you'll get above 32+ hours a week, and even weeks where you might be offered overtime - those times are rare. A majority of the time you will get three days a week; which comes out to less that 250 a week before taxes. Plan on working unusual hours and also basically every holiday. Chances are that you will also not even be able to obtain full-time within five years. Promotion to full-time is seniority based only upon bid letters.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Customer service can only be provided when there are people that are actually scheduled to help the customers.

    Pros

Pay each week, Discount on store brand items, After many years working with them those are the only pros I can think of for this review.

    Cons

No training, no true direction for new programs, New CEO changing the landscape of the company with a singular focus of making 20 Billion in sales by 2020, They try things that they hear other companies do with no real understanding how they can impliment them into a grocery environment often at the expense of those brought in to help make those changes that are promised opportunity for a new career, Strong union where managers are not allowed to manage team members and often politics play strong role in keeping team members that steal or sexually harrass or damage the reputation of the brand.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give the support needed to new managers that you hire for new roles. Dont hire them, not train them, put them in stores with no support then let them go after years of doing a job they never knew they were not doing well all while getting high marks on every performance review.

I have been working at Giant Eagle

    Pros

    nationally recognized company
    adequate benefits
    advancement possibilities
    secure company

    Cons

promotions not based on talent, yet who you are related to or who you are "close" to
many corp managers when failing are moved to other positions so they can fail somewhere else
company does not embrace cultural diversity
company does not welcome "outsiders, seems they don't want any new ideas
good people let go so others can make their annual bonuses

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company will never become " Top Place to Work" unitl executive management walks it instead of talks it. Having a highly paid faimly member run this initative speaks volumes as to core issues with company

I have been working at Giant Eagle

    Pros

    It pays the bills

    Some days are fun

Close to my house. So I save money on gas.

    Cons

    Long hours

Too many rules that are not followed by company leaders.

Too greedy. All they want is sales with less labor.
Honestly if you really think all the rules that is developed in corporate are being followed. Get out from behind your desk and put an apron on. Don't tell people how it should be done, on a piece of paper, without doing it yourself in a real "day in the life" of a "real" store. If we did everything to company policy, nothing else would get done!

More things wrong than there is right. I will be so happy when my days are done there.
It's sad because it use to be a nice company to work for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At the end of the fiscal year...make cuts at corporate. Maybe some of the useless Vice Presidents should get their paycheck cut!

    Pros

Easy to work around school schedule. Close to home. And corporate giant eagle employees get 10% off giant eagle brands.

    Cons

Lack of communication between management. No room for leveling up in company. Will not let advance in the company. And the management is not well organized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not ignore your employees. Also do not hire friends. Do not let some employees have special Privileges just because you are friends with them.
